Reflective Writing - The Best/Worst Day of My Life
Reflective Writing - The Best/Worst Day of My Life
As pupils progress in their writing, it is important to teach them how to progress their basic recount writing into reflective writing. Rather than just retell events pupils will describe their thoughts/emotions and reflect on how these events impacted them positively or negatively.
Pupils really enjoyed this writing piece and I emphasised that it didn’t have to be a hugely emotional experience which could upset them. The pupils had recently visited a residential stay so I felt that this was a good one to model for them as many of them had different experiences of it.
This resource takes you through what it means to be reflective. It also provides examples for the pupils which allows them to discuss if the paragraph recounts or reflects.
There is also a modelled writing piece which breaks the writing into sections for the pupils.

Writing - Information Text on Birds
This writing resource works well along the RSPB Bird Watch which takes place this time of year. Whether children are actively bird watching outside or simply learning about birds around them, it is a great way to engage with nature.
This lesson models for learners how to research four different birds and take notes in their jotter. It then demonstrates how to turn these short notes into engaging sentences for their reader.
Finally it models for learners how they can lay this out neatly in their jotter and include some of the key features of an information text like headings, subheadings, pictures and captions.
Writing: Information Text - Victorian Schools
This resource begins with encouraging learners to create questions about Victorian schools which can become their subheadings. It then demonstrates how to take notes and then transfer these into paragraphs.
It also then models the text on lined paper so it mirrors their jotter. It demonstrates the structures and features of an information text that they can include in theirs.

It then progresses to showing learners how to simplify by listing factors and identifying GCF. Finally it condenses it into just simpliying.
There is a short formative assessment activity differentiated across three levels. These have 8 questions each and learners can choose the level they wish to attempt.
This lesson can be broken down into multiple lessons.
