Insect Thematic Unit
Kids love bugs! With this unit they will learn what makes an insect an insect (three body parts, six legs, etc.) and will compare them to non-insects. A reproducible insect cover is included that, when stapled to blank paper and cut out, makes a great writing book for all kinds of stories or reports. The unit also includes page after page of reproducible flash cards featuring pictures and vocabulary words, along with a list of exciting games and activities you can do with the cards. A mini-reading book features the story “The Sad Caterpillar” which deals with a caterpillar with some low self-esteem who realizes at the end of the story that she was always a beautiful butterfly inside. The text can be adapted for any grade level, or even covered up to allow the students to create their own story based on the pictures!
The students can dress up as ladybugs by making their very own costumed wings! (Order our Butterfly Unit to make butterfly wings too!) This unit also includes the script for the play “The Ant and the Grasshopper” as well as the patterns for the paper bag puppets in the story! Students will learn to sing “I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly” with the delightful manipulatives that they can make and take home. There is also a centipede numberline and “super-sized” stationery in the form of a giant ant!
This book includes many other exciting activities and concludes with two end-of-the-unit certificates: one to send home and one for the classroom “Wall of Fame.” All pages are available as black and white student reproducibles as well as full color teacher samples.
Short Vowels Flip Booklets
With this title your students will create “flip books” that will allow them to quickly learn to read basic rhyming word families! Each mini-booklet is on a single piece of paper for ease of use! The students color in the picture cue, cut out the letter cards and staple them together to create a booklet in which the letters are “flipped” up to create a new word each time.
For example, for the “at” book the students read “bat.” They flip up the letter “b” to reveal another letter. They then read “hat.” This continues with mat, pat, rat, sat, fat, and that to give them nine everyday words from the same rhyming family.
There are booklets for the following families: -ag, -an, -ap, -at, -ell, -en, -et, -ig, -ip, -op, -ot, -ug, -ick, -ock and -uck.
This book also includes a checklist to keep track of the progress of the students, allowing them to work at their own level and speed.
Colors Flip Booklets
Your students will create easy-to-read “flip booklets” that will allow them to identify all of the colors! Each mini-booklet is on a single piece of paper for ease of use! The students color in the delightful pictures, cut them out and place them together to create a booklet in which the pictured item in the sentence is “flipped” up to create a new sentence each time.
For example, for the “red” booklet the students read “The ant is red.” They flip up the picture of the ant to reveal a picture of a strawberry. They then read “The strawberry is red.” This continues with ladybug, lobster and apple to give them five everyday objects that are the same color.
There are booklets for the following colors: red, blue, green, pink, gray, orange, yellow, brown, purple, black and white.
This title also includes a blank reproducible booklet pattern which allows the teacher and students to create their own flip books for any color. An additional flip book is also included which features a review of the colors in the order of the rainbow and also serves as a counting book.
Each page is available as a black and white student reproducible as well as a full color teacher sample!
Beginning Letters Flip Booklets
This one title will allow your students to create 26 mini-booklets: one for every letter of the alphabet! The entire “flip book” for each letter is on one piece of paper which saves on photocopies! Simply place the desired page on the copy machine, press the button and hand the copies over to your students. They color in the pictures, cut on the lines, put the pages together and read the resulting booklet!
For example, for the “C” book your students will track “Cat begins with c.” They then flip up the picture of the cat to reveal a picture of a car. They then read “Car begins with c.” This continues with Can, Cup and Candy to give them five words in all that all begin with the same letter. Not only do they track the sentence and learn the beginning letter and sound, they are able to compare capital letters and lower case.
