A quick and easy resource that aims to get students writing with more variety in their sentences, by using semi colons ';' in writing.

These are quick and easy activities designed to engage your students at the start of the year. The first is a classmate scavenger hunt, which is a fun way to provoke class discussion. The second is an individual and small group task designed around who they would let in to a bomb shelter after an apocalyptic disaster.

This resource explains how to produce an essay response to a Romeo and Juliet analysis question. The resource is tailored to the Edexcel Literature Paper 1, but it can be easily adapted. A complete paragraph is included, broken down into stages to help students understand the formula. Based on Act 3 Scene 5 of Romeo and Juliet.

This lesson encourages students to use sensory description to create suspenseful writing. The resource uses an image as stimulus and gets students to build up a suspenseful description. There is then an added component where students use suspenseful writing techniques to improve the introduction to an original short story. The second of this lesson implements group work. Additionally there is a HW task at the end, an extended writing task to complete the intro to the story.

An introduction to Creative and Imaginative Writing Lesson. The aims of the lessons are to get students to begin thinking imaginatively when forming ideas for passages of writing. Also investigates the expectations of the Edexcel imaginative writing assessment. This file uses Smartboard software to further engage students.

This is a 4 page resource that explains the 3 major sentence types to younger readers. It also explains and provides examples of possible effects created by the use of different sentence types. The worksheet is based on the young adult novel Skellig, but is adaptable to add in extracts to any text. A number of tasks included requiring students to apply their knowledge of sentence types and make inferences about their effects.
