Working Scientifically with Slime for Years 1 & 2
Including objectives from Key Stage 1, this pack has children participate in different Design and Technology activities with working Scientifically related to designing, making and evaluating their own slime.
Base slime recipes are provided - the slime can be made ahead of time for the children to evaluate, or the children can participate in the recipes to reinforce their understanding of fractions (halves).

Light Investigation: Design and Make a Light Maze

I have used this project with different classes and in different ways. With more able cohorts, the pitch can be adjusted with different parameters on the designs (eg: no adhesives, instead researching different ways to attach boards with latches and folds vs. using tape and glue guns; setting rules for the height of the walls of the maze to use measurement in a meaningful way; only allowing a certain length of board that needs to be cut, etc).
Our Year groups used this as an alternative to making periscopes, as it reinforces the same Science objectives about light and the way it travels. In my experience, the children have enjoyed this project more because they’re more in control of the design.

Design Your Own Candle (STEAM)
2014 National Curriculum of England’s Design Technology (Key Stage 2) objectives will be followed, as children learn about the history of candles and candle making before prototyping, designing, making, and evaluating their own candle.

Survival Invention Add-on for Novel Study
This resource is designed to be used during Reading Workshop and can be used alongside any novel with a theme of survival. Christmas STEAM: Design Your Own Christmas Stocking
In this resource, children will look at how Christmas stockings have changed over time before building a prototype. They will then design their own Christmas stocking and making it using textiles and different stitches. Children will then participate in peer- and self-evaluations.

Christmas STEAM: Design Your Own Holiday Treat
In this resource, children will research and prototype different traditional holiday treats. They will then design, make, and evaluate treats made by a peer and their own holiday treats.
Resources for researching different traditional holiday treats are provided, as well as lesson plans and rubrics. This unit follow the 2014 National Curriculum of England’s Design Technology objectives and Next Generation Science Standards.

Information Text About a MakeyMakey Controller
Children will consider video game controller design before discussing what makes a controller effective. Children will then write an informative text about how a MakeyMakey works, including what they can be used for and what makes them effective.
Scaffolds and planning checklists are provided to support children in their writing. Objectives from Year 6 are used, pulled from the 2014 National Curriculum of England and the Interim Framework.
Lesson plans, editable rubrics and classroom examples are included.

The Magic Box Poetry Mini-Unit
**Aligned with the 2014 National Curriculum of England
Included are the resources to follow a sequence of sessions where they develop their own ideas before applying them to the style of the model poem.
Children are introduced to the poem and decide what they would include in their own magic box. After reviewing poetic devices, children return to their ideas and include poetic devices to make them stronger before drafting their own poems.
As a maths and arts link, children can then design and make the nets of their magic boxes before building them into their boxes. Children can then add items and illustrations to their boxes representing the different ideas from their poems.

The Outsiders STEAM: Product Re-branding
Students choose (or are assigned) a product that they must re-brand for either the Greasers or the Socs. They’ll consider questions about what would make a product more appealing to one group over another? What colors and logos would make it appealing?
Students follow through with the design and engineering process, designing, prototyping, making, and evaluating.

Working Scientifically with MakeyMakey in Years 3 & 4
Make Working Scientifically more fun with MakeyMakey!
This resource has been designed to use as a way to teach the Working Scientifically objectives apart from the core science objectives.
In the past, I have used the lessons with the class as a way to reinforce the concept of a fair test, as well as different types of variables. The pack has been broken up into objectives for Years 3 and 4.
Using the MakeyMakey gives the children the opportunity to go deeper into concepts, combining them with engineering, design and core science. Children can also create products with the littleBits to present their findings from enquiries and conclusions as a way to show their understanding.

In this resource, children will investigate different Olympic medals, analysing their design and at how they have changed over time.
Children will then design, make, and evaluate their own medal and ribbon, using different art skills.
