As part of Theme 1 (La evolución de la sociedad española) in the Edexcel scheme of work, I created this two-hour lesson to discuss the role of grandparents. Plenty of authentic materials: a reading, a listening (created from a podcast seen in RTVE) and a translation (from El País).

Text about new technologies with a focus on social networks (Instagram in particular). Three new GCSE (Edexcel) exam style of questions (gap fill) - two in English and one in Spanish. Two exercises focused on vocabulary and expressions. One true/false/not mentioned activity. One writing exercise.

This worksheet includes: 10 short paragraphs about why learning another language is important 5 follow-up exercises with instructions in Spanish to test students’ reading skills and one exercise to allow students to write their own opinion about why learning a language is important, using the vocabulary seen.

Two sample bullet points (not full tasks) for each GCSE theme and sample answers to analyse all the good vocabulary and structures to include. I’ve created a worksheet for students and a ppt (with answers) to deliver the lesson in class.

Looking for different ways to help students, I saw on Twitter the idea of a ladder reflecting elements needed for grades. It starts with an easy present tense sentence and finishes with a sentence which includes an indirect object pronoun. This resource can be used at the start of a lesson, to test how much students know on a particular subject or can be given as homework for students to work independently. Whole lesson to discuss trends in tourism and to understand more about World Heritage sites. Exercises focusing on reading understanding, vocabulary and speaking (activity at the end)

I came up with some sample sentences for students to refer to past and future on the topic of school. This resource can be particularly useful for those students who struggle to manipulate verbs - you could ask them to memorise a couple of sentences for each topic in preparation for their speaking or writing exam.

Full PPT lesson providing information about the Edexcel GCSE Speaking exam, focusing on task 3 (the conversation). It includes: Three examples of the one minute presentation (the actual recording from former students in 2018 and the transcript). Topics used: theme 3 (school) and theme 4 (work). An activity to focus on key language and structures in the three presentations. An example of the follow-up questions in the conversation (the actual recording from a former student in 2018). Assessment criteria for the conversation part of the speaking for students to understand and be able to use it.

Two exam-style reading comprehension questions. Both questions are in the target language and use the same wording that they will find on the Edexcel paper. The text is an extract from Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal. Answers are also provided.

KS4 (Year 9 - Year 11 low ability) lesson to practise vocabulary on free time activities. To make it a bit more current, I included pictures of Greta Thunberg doing different activities in her free time and this is how the vocabulary is introduced. All answers included.

Whole lesson on the context of Spain’s transition to democracy, explaining both the roles of the King Juan Carlos I and Adolfo Suárez, but focusing on Suárez. Authentic materials have been used for listening tasks and adapted for reading comprehension questions. There is a speaking at the end taken from the Edexcel exam in 2018.

ANSWERS are provided** This resource explores the strong sense of manliness in reggaeton lyrics. It analyses both negatives and positives and it’s very current. Skills practised: reading, writing and translation. If done in class, speaking will definitely be practised with some open questions at the end.
