Students are asked to find different ‘pieces’ of a gothic story (for example: characters, setting, curses, colours, lighting, weather etc) - these will be stuck around the room before the lesson begins. Once each group has found every piece, they then have 15 minutes to discuss and plan a gothic story using the elements they have collected. Then students will use these ideas to independently write up their own gothic story. Lesson is aimed at KS3 but can be adapted for older years. Lesson is planned using the TEEP model. Lesson is differentiated using the GCSE mark scheme.

Guess Who - Speaking & Listening. To gather & present information on an allocated topic.

Used as part of the speaking and listening GCSE module but can work as a stand alone lesson to practice speaking and listening skills. Could also be adapted for teaching non-fiction if needed. Lesson starter asks students to write down a funny story that is either truth or a lie. The teacher then collects these in and returns to them for the plenary. The main part of the lesson involves students been allocated a topic and having to work with others to gather information about that topic to eventually present their findings.

Used as part of the speaking and listening GCSE module but can work as a stand alone lesson to practice speaking and listening skills. Could also be adapted for teaching non-fiction if needed. Lesson is based around the concept of Room 101 with students being asked to think about their pet peeves and eventually work in a group to present a short presentation on why it should be put into room 101.
