5 homework sheets aimed at helping students develop their skills in planning an answer for Language Paper 1 Question 5. Each sheet asks students to plan a list of powerful vocabulary (challenge to find synonyms to improve their vocab choices), a list of language devices and a list of the senses. Lesson is differentiated using aim/challenge/super challenge and the GCSE mark scheme. Tasks and questions are differentiated throughout and there is a help sheet to support lower ability students with structuring their answer. Lesson uses the poems ‘Poppies’ and ‘Remains’ and students are asked to think about the key themes, similarities and differences and then eventually answer a differentiated exam style question (3 question choices.) Gothic Horror lesson analysing how language is used to describe Mr Hyde. Aimed at a high ability year 8 class but can easily be adapted to suit other abilities/year groups. Differentiated using aim/challenge/super challenge and the GCSE mark scheme. Includes WAGOLL answers for students to assess using the mark scheme. Lesson has been structured using the TEEP model.

Used as part of the speaking and listening GCSE module but can work as a stand alone lesson to practice speaking and listening skills. Could also be adapted for teaching non-fiction if needed. Lesson starter asks students to write down a funny story that is either truth or a lie. The teacher then collects these in and returns to them for the plenary. The main part of the lesson involves students been allocated a topic and having to work with others to gather information about that topic to eventually present their findings.

Aimed at a top set year 8 class- can easily be adapted for KS4 students. Includes a range of Gothic texts such as Frankenstein, Jekyll and Hyde, Dracula, Northanger Abbey. Teaches various language techniques such as pathetic fallacy, manichean symbolism, show don’t tell, foreshadowing etc. Lessons are planned using the TEEP format. Objectives and outcomes are designed to fit the GCSE criteria to prepare students for the style of the examinations. Differentiated using Aim, Challenge and Super Challenge tasks.

Students read an extract from Bob Geldof’s diary which sparked the song 'Do They Know It’s Christmas Time?, discuss the impact of the song and how persuasive writing techniques have been used.
