Types of Radiation card sort for GCSE Physics

Designed for GCSE Physics students, this card sort is a matching activity for types of radiation and their properties. There are 3 cards for alpha, beta and gamma radiation with 21 property cards (an additional 4 cards for lower ability students). This can be used as a starter, plenary or within the lesson as a teaching tool. It could also be used as a revision exercise. The full set could be used with small groups or individuals. In addition, the second PowerPoint contains instructions and tables (blank and with answers) which could help guide students, or allow them to use the cards independently. The Word document contains blank version of both tables which students can complete as an additional exercise.

These resources are ideal for allowing students to test their knowledge of the frequency/wavelength of photons absorbed/emitted by electrons as they transition between energy levels. I printed the energy level diagrams on card and gave each pair a set. With the correct answers, I wrote a letter on the back of each card which would make a Physics term or terms (e.g. Doppler & Young). Incorrect answers had random letters written on the back, then all coloured cards were stuck in various locations around the room, to make a treasure hunt. For my Year 13 AS Physics students (medium to high ability) this activity took 15-20 minutes and was great for revision. The Word document includes instructions which can be given to the pairs/groups with their energy level diagram cards.

These resources are ideal for allowing students to test their knowledge of total resistance in series and parallel circuits. I printed the network diagrams on card and gave each pair a set. With the correct answers, I wrote a letter on the back of each card which would make a Physics term or terms (e.g. longitudinal).
