This poetry reading comprehension supports students in distinguishing their own point of view from the author (or in this case, the poet). There are six poems in which the poet expresses their point of view on a particular topic. the accompanying six task cards then ask students to consider how their own point of view compares. NO PREPARATION REQUIRED The poems and task cards require no preparation and can be printed or completed digitally (on slides). The tasks are open-ended, meaning there is no right or wrong answer. There is therefore no need for an answer key. A RANGE OF POEMS The six poems cover a variety of contentious topics such as: -Not wanting a pet -Only having a small number of friends -Digital books are a bad idea -We must stop throwing away so much waste -Being bored indicates a lack of imagination The poems are written in such a way to encourage students to decide whether they agree or disagree. Known as the night of power, Laylat ul Qadr takes place during the last 10 days of Ramadan. It is a night of deep worship, prayer and giving to charity. The lesson covers what Laylat ul Qadr is and how it forms part of Ramadan, how people mark this date and why certain activities take place. The main activity is to take on the role of Aadil, who is writing an email to his boss requesting time off work to mark Laylat ul Qadr. They must use what they have learnt to persuade his boss. Links are made with persuasive techniques, so this would fit well with a persuasive writing unit in writing lessons. Non-Fiction Reading Comprehension Tasks - Diary Entry These reading comprehension diary entry tasks bring a little something different to your reading comprehension lessons. There are three diary entry texts from three members of a class: two classmates and their teacher. Each entry then has a series of comprehension questions (and answers) about the text. Your students will enjoy reading the three diary entries, all based on the first day back after the summer holidays. Each one gives a slightly different perspective of the day. There are ten questions based on each one, with a mix of multiple choice, shorter answers and longer responses required.
