CSI Ballistics analysis - Kinetic energy of bullet

(9)
This activity gets pupils calculating the kinetic energy of bullets from different guns. As assassination of Michael Gove has occurred and they need to know the energies of the different guns. KS4: Good for middle to higher groups using the kinetic energy and thinking about loss of energy as bullets travel through the air. Place the 'bullet data' cards around the classroom and get pupils to move around and analyse the data. All images used under creative commons licence.
AQA P1.6 Hubble's Law Worksheet from 1929 data

AQA P1.6 Hubble's Law Worksheet from 1929 data

(12)
This worksheet gives pupils Hubble's original 1929 data on the distance and velocities of a range of galaxies. Pupils are given axis and must plot distance against time a draw a conclusion from the data (Hubble’s law). V = Ho x D Velocity = (1/Time) x Distance. KS4: Good for getting pupils to plot graphs and find relationships. Most able pupils can be given graph paper and asked about strong/weak correlation. KS5: Good for calculating gradient and deriving Hubble’s constant (about 500 km/s/MPc for this 1929 data). Most able can find Hubble time (T=1/Ho) as the age of the universe.
Energy bill from power, time and cost

Energy bill from power, time and cost

(3)
Pupils are given the power consumption of a range of appliances over a three month period and have to calculate Energy from power x time. The cost is then calculated and a bill calculated for the total energy used. Best for medium to lower ability sets or as a starter for higher sets.
P1.2 Energy efficiency and conservation of energy

P1.2 Energy efficiency and conservation of energy

(85)
AQA P1.2: A power point and two activity sheets (with cards) for pupils to complete. Firstly on the conservation of energy with examples on the board and a worksheet to complete. Secondly the use of the efficiency formula with pupils using a sheet and a set of cards (to be placed around the classroom) for them to gather information from. The plenary activity is a splat game whereby two pupils can be brought to the front and play against each other. It is the first person to hit the correct answer with their hand (or fly swatter if you have one). openclipart.org
Terminal velocity worksheet

Terminal velocity worksheet

(16)
Pupils are given a set of data to plot for a parachute jump and have to label on the different motions. Good 10-15 minute activity. KS4: Good for thinking about Newton's first law and balanced and unbalanced forces. KS5: Good for plotting graphs and calculating acceleration from gradients at different points (get them to plot then work out the acceleration after 10 seconds).
Power, energy and time solar panel analysis

Power, energy and time solar panel analysis

(9)
This activity gets pupils to calculate energy generated from a range of solar panels and work out the payback time from the current price per kWh given by the government (4.1p per kWh). The Solar panel comparison data.pptx can be printed out and the cards can be left around the room for pupils to gather data from. Pupils then have to draw a graph and write a letter based on two customers needs. Power, Energy, Time, Kilowatt hours, kWh, payback times, efficiency, literacy, formal letter.

AQA P2.1 - Speed, distance and time

(2)
This lesson covers all aspects of speed, distance and time, focusing on using the s=d÷t formula and analysing distance time graphs. The lesson explains how to calculate speed using gradients on a distance time graph. The lesson is accompanied with differentiated worksheets set at three levels: 'Bronze', 'Silver', and 'Gold'. There is also a differentiated homework worksheets. Each worksheet comes with fully worked answers loaded onto Power Point slides, so that marking can be done either by the teacher or by the students/peers.
P2.1: Newton's 1st and 2nd Law, resultant force and F=ma calculations
greenyoshigreenyoshi

P2.1: Newton's 1st and 2nd Law, resultant force and F=ma calculations

(2)
Summary 1. Classic investigation into the link between force and acceleration using wooden dynamic trolleys. 2. Circus activity for pupils to collect data and calculate resultant force and acceleration using F=ma 3. Plenary and differentiated homework sheet with bronze, silver and gold difficulties. All include worked answers for self marking. This lesson give a range of activities for pupils to investigate Newton's 2nd law using ISA words. The presentation then gives a range of worked examples and support for pupils to understand and use Newton's 1st and 2nd Laws. The homework is differentiated to help all pupils in the class make progress during the lesson.

Electricity supply and demand AQA P1.4

(4)
Electrical supply data from the national grid for pupils to plot and answer questions on. Extension question attached for higher ability students (top). Start-up times explained, with a table of the approximate start-up times for comparison. Foundation version for lower ability students.
P1.1 States of matter card sort
greenyoshigreenyoshi

P1.1 States of matter card sort

(2)
This states of matter card sort gets pupils to match up the states, change of states and conductors/insulators. Pupils have to think about the forces holding the particles together and the energy the particles in each state have.
OCR P5 - Transistors, logic gates and truth tables
greenyoshigreenyoshi

OCR P5 - Transistors, logic gates and truth tables

(1)
This differentiated lesson will explain the basic function of a transistor, along with the five types of logic gate that can be created with it, and that pupils need to know for the OCR Physics specification. This lesson explains how OR, AND, NOT, NAND and NOR gates work, as well as their associated truth tables. The lesson also shows how two or more gates can be combines and gets pupils to complete truth tables for these circuits. The lesson also sets the pupils a task of designing multiple logic gate circuits for a range of real world applications, each with a worked example to show on the board. The lesson has three plenaries to check your pupils understanding.
