For the 11+ and Year 5 and 6 examinations, langauge analysis is a crucial skill that needs to be teased out. I have developed the PowerPoint to go through general advice, the key skills needed through isolated examples, and then analysis through key phrases from the extract. There is a particular emphasis on the command word ‘How’ and what to do when phased with such a word. Based on Chapter 1 from Holes - extract attached with starter questions

Tone, atmosphere and setting

Hello to the wonderful English teachers. This is a (rather long) PowerPoint session that walks through tone, atmosphere and setting. It also looks at P.E.E structure and how to best use it. Finally, it goes through the commonly (often ill-answered) questions, that have the command word ‘How’. This can be delivered via online teaching as well as in the normal classroom environment. Enjoy.

Writing an article

Year 10 and 11 - writing an article. (Edexcel and AQA) I have exhausted the typical article question such as write an article on why ‘homework should be banned’ and ‘school uniform is good’ etc etc… and my classes wanted something new and different. So, I picked something controversial such as whether cycle lanes were good or bad and my classes was surprisingly upbeat and very engaged! They had some really excellent ideas, I was proud of them all! The PowerPoint went down well and they really enjoyed it. Enjoy!

Year 5/6 Comprehension and Composition with model answers

Includes a booklet with a comprehension and questions, as well as a composition. The style mirrors that of 11+ exams, so would help with ISEB preparation for schools or with grammar school entry. A challenging resource - even for my higher ability students. Notably as the two characters are nameless, students are forced to think about how they should phrase their answers without referring to the characters as ‘him’ or ‘they’. I am finding 11+ exams are becoming tougher and therefore this reflects this new challenge. I have also included a powerpoint that has some sample answers. Also a very brief outline of a lesson plan- highlights what i did in each lesson with my students, and some questions that may want to be explored verbally to get the students engaged. Harder ideas about writers purpose such as structural changes (why has the text changed from present to past tense is also explored) and consideration of what we associate"warmth" and "cold’ with, and how they could reflect the mood of a person, I found this helps with characterisation. Some students really could not see how the two link, and needed a lot of encouragement.
