Waves Refraction Diffraction Reflection SOLO

(2)
This encourages deeper thinking and can be used with all ability levels. Students cut out the hexagons and put two or three together that they can match eg: REFRACTED and SPEED can be placed together. Students will then need to write how they are linked together ie: When light enters a medium its speed is changed and it is refracted. Encourage students to make as many links as they can. Higher tier students should then identify the concepts that the clusters make. If you need any help with this contact me at @heelismichelle

P13.5 X-Rays in Medicine (2018 Exam)

(2)
APOLOGIES FOR MISSING FILE - THIS HAS NOW BEEN UPDATED Objective: To understand what x-rays are used for, the dangers and safety precautions related to medical x-rays and how x-rays work. Clock activity is suitable for all abilities and can be used in a variety of ways: - “hot potato”, seat students in pairs and issue the clock questions, in their pairs students choose a question and are given 2 minutes to find and write and answer. The sheets are all rotated and students choose another question to answer on the next sheet. Sheets are rotated 12 times and students end up with their original sheet in front of them. Go through the answers and students correct where appropriate. - give students information on x-rays (printed webpages, textbooks etc), and working in pairs complete the activity. Webquest activity is suitable for higher achievers. Students are required to complete a set of notes on a graphic organiser and then using only those notes, write a newspaper report. Both of these activities lend well to peer assessment and paired work.

Kinetic Energy and Gravitational Potential Energy Magazine Activity

This magazine-type activity has always been a firm favourite with my groups. Put students in groups and have them work through the metacognition, calculations and understanding activities, or this can be set as a long-term homework. The key is to allow them to "get on with it" and source help from peers, text etc. At the end of the activity I usually do a peer assessment and then a directed feedback task.

Work Done and Energy Transferred - 16 Differentiated questions and answers

(1)
The resource focuses on understanding how to calculate energy transferred/work done. (I have included an example completed by one of my students for ease of reference). Included are 2 versions, one where students are given the answers and have to show their calculations, the other where they have to work out the answers for themselves. Personally I find that giving them the answers helps them to unpick their own mistakes rather than being told where they went wrong. The resource is designed to develop these problem solving skills through math. Differentiated questions - Q1 - 4 and Q9-12 are suitable for middle/low attainers. The activity is best done after a teacher explanation, or with suitable textbooks. Running time is approximately 40mins to an hour.
