A way into this year's theme - Freedom. Thinking routine to consider theme and some ideas to formulate poems.

Designed for supported set to middle ability S3 or S4 , these activities lead pupils towards a critical evaluation of the poem. National 4 level would cope well with these and pupils are engaged with the poem. Simple cloze passage, multiple choice and puzzles to enhance understanding of key ideas.

Designed for low ability supported S3 class. Accessible tasks with a textual analysis drama at the end.

Designed to prepare National 4/3 class for the world of work through English. Focus on the language of job adverts then working on a simple CV writing assignment. Works well in supporting less able pupils.

The Hurt Locker is a film that will work at National 3,4 and 5 for Critical Essay Media. A supported unit for pupils (National 5 S5 pupils who have completed Nat 4). Comes with activity sheet and fully supported CEL. Appeals to boys and girls (I designed it with a set of mainly S4 boys) and it worked really well. Pupils were very engaged in the film and the discussions around key moments.

Two PPTs with a variety of prompts (14) for small group discussion and activities to complete as a team. Role cards and self evaluation cards for teachers to print and use with pupils. Designed for National 3 and 4 group discussion practice and assessment.

Supported and detailed CEL IRL based on the fairy fight, plus three models of newspaper reports. Designed for S2 - S3 pupils studying Shakespeare. Tried and tested - works well with classes.

Full unit of work on the short story 'The Sniper' by Liam O'Flaherty. Supported PPT to lead pupils through critical essay. Unit designed and used many times successfully with S3 and National 4/3. Added support sheets for less able pupils.

Using cooperative learning, set of lessons that helps pupils teambuild. Very effective lessons that pupils enjoyed and led to reflection on social skills as well as behaviour management. Used to establish cooperative techniques and introduce the course. Can be used at any level of secondary school.

Designed for Higher English Students after the play has been taught. Worked really well and pupils enjoyed their experiences. Three active learning tasks: 1. Visual collage of images 2. Creating a class poem that develops understanding of character and theme 3. Drama task using freeze frames to get pupils out of their seats to retell the story using physical imagery Examples and prompts included.

Focus on flashback structure and language. PPT designed for pupils to work through at their own pace after initial teaching. S1 focus but can be used to support creative writing in S2-S4 supported sets. Outcome: WW1 short story. Pupils very positive about this work - especially boys who are not particularly motivated.

Designed for supported sets or S1 Creative Writing. The PowerPoint is designed for pupils to use at their own pace after initial teaching. Helps to shape stories with a twist at the end. Very good for supported sets in S2-S4 and has a variety of outcomes from classes.
