This SOW is a fun way to introduce non-fiction reading to students with little experience of it. It uses extracts from non-fiction travel writing from explorers from a diverse background and uses places from across the world to teach reading and writing skills. Loosely following Nellie Bly’s trip around the world in 72 days, this scheme of work should: encourage students to engage with a global perspective on literature; allow students to engage with explorers from diverse backgrounds; teach students valuable reading and writing skills. This SOW has been designed to support KS3 students in the transition to GCSE work. It has 26 complete lessons which build both reading and writing skills. It revolves around Victorian England and includes extracts from Dickens’ non-fiction writing to compliment an understanding of Victorian England at GCSE. It is designed to mimic AQA GCSE English Language Paper 2 - both Section A and B. It is primarily designed for Year 7 & 8 students, but could be used with lower Year 9 students if necessary. It is primarily designed for Year 7 & 8 students, but could be used with lower Year 9 students if necessary. This lesson teaches different types of sentences that can be included in creative writing and is twinned with Lesson 6. They are building up to a long piece of writing. There are success criteria and models included in every lesson.

This lesson is the fourth in a sequence of lessons designed for at home learning with lower KS3 students. It revolves at first around analysing and comprehending a reading text of your choice before moving on to writing. It is primarily designed for Year 7 & 8 students, but could be used with lower Year 9 students if necessary. This lesson begins by thinking about the setting of their own text and ends with some creative writing. There is also a self assessment task at the end. There are success criteria and models included in every lesson.

It revolves at first around analysing and comprehending a reading text of your choice before moving on to writing.
