A lesson in a SOW intended for a three year GCSE looking at the AQA: America 1920 -1973. Students look at the impact of the car industry on America. The lesson is largely teacher led with information and question to pose to the class, as well as discussion about images and graphs. There is a GCSE question included with sentence starters for the less able and challenge tasks to stretch the top end. There is also a model answer for students to evaluate as a class or on their own.

A great revision activity that I’ve done in lesson and in revision sessions. Students given score cards and rules and off they go. I recommenced laminating the score cards so they can be written on and wiped off. Add questions to the question cards cut them up and place them in cups. This idea may take some preparation and set up time You will need to get yourself some large cups and ping pong balls, recommend your local pound shop. This really worked for getting Low attainment boys to voluntary come to revision after school. Would then get some exam skills and practice in afterwards.

The lesson gets students to look at a different interpretation of the Norman Conquest. The task of reading parts of the Anglo-Chronicle is difficult and I would recommend that it is differentiated for some students. The aim is to get students to think about how an event can be interpreted differently by different people. Students work in groups reading through the chronicle and create a sketch chronology (picture flow diagram) of the events it discusses, allowing them to compare it with the events of the bayeux tapestry. Students in the next lesson will attempt to answer a GCSE interpretation question.

I use this task as a mini plenary or starter or a form of revision, each time a student answers as question correctly they can choose a block to remove, they then attempt to guess what the picture is showing and how it links to what we have learnt. The process is repeated until students can guess it. To add a picture past it and shape it to whole screen. Then send the image to the back for it to be behind the numbers that disappear. This works really well for historical sources but also other images and diagrams.

Inspired by the game show Only Connect, students have to work in groups to be the quickest to work out the link/connection between groups of 4 words, works well for a recap lesson or plenary. Students click on the word to change its colour and must group the board into 4 groups and work out the links between them. The timer gives them 2.5 minutes to do this. Or show the words on the board and set the timer and use the worksheet for all students to try and work out the link. Students liked working in groups and competing to get the fastest time.

This lesson looks at how castles changed over time. Students work in groups to write a dragons den themed speech trying to persuade others to invest. Chance to build up literacy with practicing writing to persuade. Students then do their pitches whilst people complete the sheet. Then are there a GCSE styled question with sentence starters. There are challenge tasks to stretch the higher end of the group.

A good revision task that get students to improve description and understanding of key words. Create key word cards with 5 words/facts they need to include. Students take it in turns to be told the key word and describe it trying to get as many of the 5 points in the key word. however many of the points they get off the card they score that many points. Students take it on turns after 3 rounds whoever has scored more wins.

A pointless inspired themed plenary, it is interactive so the answer if correct will reveal a unique score which in teams they can keep track of, for each round. Press the small circle to reveal score. If the answer is wrong click the large purple circle to reveal an X and students score 100.

After struggling to find lots of sources for exam practice here is a selection of Public Health sources. Ideas: Students have to try and place them into time period. Get students to work out the message and purpose of each source. Print them out and link them with each other or with key words.

This task works well for a recap activity. The images can be swapped if wanted. Students annotate the images with notes on what they can remember about the topic. Students can then try and make links between the different images.

This lesson forms part of a SOW for AQA America 1920- 73 Opportunity and inequality. This lesson focuses on the TVA and gets students to investigate its impact on America. Students use the information to create their own fireside chat, with sentence starters for those that need it. This task also has a literacy focus of making the writing more persuasive. The lesson includes some challenge tasks and a GCSE practice question, with a model answer to analyse on their own or as a class.

This version of connect four involves printing off the tokens and laminating them. This allows you to write on key words. At the end of a lesson students can be chosen to choose a key word and define it and then place it on the game grid. This is a good way of using AFL to gauge students understanding, this works especially well for revision of a topic

Students use their prior knowledge to complete a choice of two tasks about factors in medical progress. There is a differentiated sheet for students who may need it. There is a GCSE styled question with sentence starters. The lesson has challenge tasks through out to stretch and challenge the top end of classes.
