This unit of work is a heavily chunked writing unit that guides learners slowly through the process of producing an extended piece of persuasive writing. The “Room 101 Rant” that learners produce is themed on the Room 101 TV show where contestants “banish” things that annoy them about the real world. By using persuasive techniques and a discursive structure, learners will persuade their reader of the three things that they would banish from the real world. This is a fun and highly engaging unit of work, designed for S2/Y8 learners, but is well suited to lower year groups. As well as the main skills of writing, reviewing, and identifying/using persuasive language, this unit engages heavily with self- and peer- modes of assessment, and practises learners’ ability to deliver and utilise them both. The unit of nine main lessons (most were designed as double periods) guides the class through the production of a first and final draft piece of persuasive writing, which can be used for summative assessment. The unit includes differentiated materials to support the higher and lower ends, as well as a set of nine main lesson PPTs which are visually well designed and supported with engaging starter tasks, plenaries, digital learning activities, and interactive timers embedded into the PPT.

Most activities are differentiated with some more challenging, bonus questions for early finishers. The questions within written activities are designed to increase in difficulty in order to both push learners, and to ensure weaker members of the class are still able to complete tasks. This SoW assumes no knowledge of the play, however as revision focused lessons. The context sections and practice essays are especially useful for this mode of work. Four practice papers, each containing two texts and three complete exemplar essays, for Paper 1 (questions 1, 2, and 3). That’s a total of 12 exemplar essays and practice questions. The exemplars included are top mark/Level 5 standard. There are 8 texts and 12 essays in total included with this pack. Each essay is approximately 600 words in length. The texts cover multiple genres and periods. The questions can be used for mock exams, and the exemplars as a useful feedback tool. Each follow the standard English Language A Level Paper 1 mark scheme available from AQA’s website.

This is a 60-question 11+ multiple choice practice paper. The main reading text is Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. This pack includes a printable exam, answer sheet, and quick-mark answer key. On the answer key, the questions are divided into the following areas which can each then receive an individual percentage to assess a student’s individual strengths and weaknesses: reading vocabulary punctuation spelling grammar (verbs/tenses) grammar (modal verbs/phrases) This has been designed with the 11+ in mind, but can be used as a general KS2 exam.
