My Everyday Science KS2 cards can help you teach NC Y5 Properties & Changes of Materials lessons through children working-scientifically, using household/kitchen resources. They prompt questioning, explorations and investigations and, if printed, don’t rely on Internet access. They can be used for home learning, blended learning, science clubs or lesson ideas.

What conducts electricity?: To explore a simple circuit
Magnetic Attraction: To investigate magnets and magnetic forces
Marvellous Materials: To explore the properties and uses of different materials
Dissolving and Crystals: To investigate what substances dissolve in water and grow your own salt crystals
Evaporation and Boiling: To investigate how evaporation depends on temperature or another variable
Separating Stuff: To devise and carry out a multi-step process to separate ingredients from a mixture
Melting and Freezing: To investigate how substances change when you heat or cool them
Reversible or Irreversible?: To identify physical and chemical changes and test which changes can be reversed
Safety Note: I have tried to include only practical work that I consider safe for children to do under the supervision of parents/carers and with prior instructions from a teacher.
