Now updated - two new files, tweaked ever so slightly to reflect the wording of the two new clusters - Love and Relationships and Power and Conflict. For use with the Character and Voice section; I have found it useful to blow this up to A3 and have students fill in using different colours for points, quotations, and analysis. Useful for mixed ability groups - for high ability I set an extra task for students to develop comparisons and contrasts further.

Some brief notes to prompt students in their reading of Scene One.

For use with CIE 0486 IGCSE English Literature, five extracts from Austen's novel. They are a little longer than the extracts usually provided in the examination but good for practice and close analysis. Particularly good blown up to A3 and annotated in beautiful colours!

A quick settling activity asking students to label places important to setting for Austen's novel. Can be used as an introduction to considering the relevance of setting to Austen's overall message.

Designed for use with CIE IGCSE English Literature 0486 (2019) and 0992 (2020), this resource encourages students to look carefully at a range of details used to create the character of Bounderby. Starts with a great clip from Monty Python - the ‘Yorkshiremen’ sketch! This resource was designed for an able group and therefore includes additional terminology more often found in language study, but could easily be adapted to support less able students. The extracts from the novel are included - these were printed in the middle of an A4 sheet and students annotate. Lastly… please excuse my messy board handwriting - I have left it in place to give you an idea how the tasks could be completed.

Includes a multi-stage revision timeline, firstly using the traditional Look, Cover, Check method, then moving on to a scaffold adding details for students to fill in. Good post-reading revision to familiarise students with the plot in chronological order.

A handy wordsearch for the end of year - I have a very able Y8 class who will use this, but could be distributed to year 9-11 as well; possibly even 6th form. There is no theme or pattern to the novels; of course there are many classics not included!

A scheme of work for a highly motivated and able Year 10 group. For classes less inclined to read independently, I would either flip the class work with the prep/homework or extend the SoW to allow some time for in class reading. Designed for CIE 0486 - IGCSE English Literature.

A lesson in which students are divided into groups to complete characterisation posters. They can use the templates included or design their own. This follows whole class work exploring the character of Fanny Price; for less able students, this work could be split over a series of lessons with examples provided for each character. Designed for IGCSE English Literature - understanding of the novel’s characters allows students to analyse passages more effectively. Includes a slide with an exemplar paragraph which students can use as a framework to help them structure their writing - aimed at A*/A students.

Designed for CIE IGCSE 0486 (2019) and 0992 (2020) Prose section. I set a task for students to read Hard Times over the summer break, with the promise that they would have a plot test on return. There are 30 questions on this resource, plus a handy teacher answer sheet for ease of marking! We are now re-reading sections of the novel as we study it in class, and the fact that they all have a basic understanding of the plot makes their engagement with the text much clearer.
