CIE Paper 6 Alternative to Practical Ultimate Guide

(0)
This resource has been prepared to guide students on how best to approach and answer the questions that typically arise in the CIE Paper 6 Alternative to Practical. The resource is a single presentation, best used in conjunction with the following two CIE examination papers: M20 62 and S20 61 (available to download from the CIE School Support Hub or other distribution websites such as https://papers.gceguide.com/IGCSE/Biology (0610)/2020/). The resource covers the following topics and question types: method writing, identifying variables, constructing a graph, biological drawings, calculating magnification, as well as a range of other skill areas frequently assessed in this paper. Personally, I will be using the resource as a revision aid on the morning of the examination, with students having access to printouts of the relevant papers that are used as examples throughout the presentation. Any images used are not my own and I have attempted to credit images where possible.

Amazing Adaptations (2x KS3 lessons)

(0)
Two full lessons on Animal and Plant Adaptations, each focusing on the vast array of weird and wonderful adaptations observed in nature, before tasking students with designing their own organisms (with a limited amount of spending money!). The first lesson focuses on predator and prey adaptations, the second on environmental adaptations. Lessons are aimed at KS3 students, however, there is plenty of challenge available and many aspects can be adapted for KS4, GCSE classes. No planning required, no printing required, all tasks are in the presentation and ready to go. Enjoy.
OCR Biology Practical Endorsement (PAG) Supplement for Year 2 / A2 Biology

OCR Biology Practical Endorsement (PAG) Supplement for Year 2 / A2 Biology

(2)
This resource has been prepared to accompany the Year 1 / AS Practical Endorsement Booklet for those who have already purchased this resource. Included are practical activity guides for the remaining 4 PAGs that are not covered by the Year 1 / AS Booklet. In addition there are updated summary sheets which will supersede the pre-existing ones. I have not updated the original PAG tracker which was included in the original bundle primarily due to the fact that the official OCR PAG tracker is more functional and, to be honest, I would recommend using this instead. As always any feedback, good or bad, is much appreciated.

OCR Biology Practical Endorsement (PAG) Booklet for A Level Biology

(0)
A practical endorsement booklet for the new OCR Biology specification for use throughout the two years of study. Provided are practical activity guides for each of the 12 practical activity groups (PAGs) and a summary table to concisely show the criteria covered by each PAG. These have been adapted from existing OCR endorsed practical tasks to include clear scaffolds for students to successfully complete work and ultimately achieve the overall practical endorsement that is required to pass the course. Also included in each practical activity guide are questions which further link the practical tasks to the course specification to develop valuable skills for the examinations.

OCR Biology Practical Endorsement (PAG) Booklet for Year 1 / AS Biology

(8)
A practical endorsement booklet for the new OCR Biology specification for use in AS / Year 1 Biology. Although not a course requirement for the first year of study , this booklet provides practical activity guides for all of the practical activity groups (PAGs) which link in with the first year specification (8 out of 12 PAGs in total). This can be kept to provide evidence of PAG completion for students progressing into Year 2 / A2, yet can still provide invaluable experience in practical skills and analysis for the Year 1 / AS only students. Please see the OCR Biology Practical Endorsement (PAG) A2 Supplement for additional practical activity sheets to cover the remaining PAGs. Alternatively, a complete Practical Endorsement Booklet, which combines both of these resources and covers the full course, can also be downloaded.

B2 Additional Biology learning mats

(11)
This resource is comprised of a series of exam style questions based around unfamiliar contexts and is designed for use in pupil-led revision sessions. Best used, each question could be printed as a full page slide and all then arranged around the room. The mark schemes included in the resource can also be printed and compiled into a booklet which, left at the front of the class, can be used for self assessment (or for assistance if required). There is then a basic mark sheet that could also be used for students to record their scores. This may be used to identify strengths and weaknesses in particular topic areas.

B2 Additional Biology SOW - Speciation

(25)
A sequence of three lessons beginning with species extinctions, followed by a practical activity to demonstrate how new species are formed, and ending with a series of contextualised questions and previous exam questions with respect to speciation. The practical activity will hopefully be self-explanatory and is best carried out with use of the data entry spread sheet also included. It begins with a recap of natural selection before the practical task is developed to simulate speciation. Try not to discuss the theory behind speciation before the practical task, but allude to it throughout the practical, before allowing students to develop their own ideas based on the practical. The lesson sequence includes plenty of opportunity for assessment.
Cell Model task sheet & feedback proforma
jings65jings65

Cell Model task sheet & feedback proforma

(1)
A level-assessed task similar to the old KS3 AF tasks where students are tasked with creating a model cell. Also included are tips and a proforma for time-efficient marking and feedback of said tasks to minimise teacher workload.
DNA Structure & Protein Synthesis
jings65jings65

DNA Structure & Protein Synthesis

(12)
This resource is a full lesson powerpoint which includes an introduction to DNA structure followed by a series of activities which lead students towards developing their own explanations of how proteins are made, followed by exam practise and a plenary task. The main activity in the powerpoint is best introduced without any prior explanation of the theory of protein synthesis, so that students can then complete the follow up task based on their own understanding acquired through the activity.
Genetic disorders grade-assessed task
jings65jings65

Genetic disorders grade-assessed task

(1)
This resource follows a similar format to the old KS3 AF tasks which included 'level ladders'. Adapted for GCSE students, this task includes a series of criteria each relating to a specific grade and component of the 'genes and inheritance' topic of AQA Additional Biology.

Evolution & Natural Selection
jings65jings65

Evolution & Natural Selection

(4)
Included is a lesson plan and pupil work booklet aimed at introducing evolution by natural selection to a KS4 class. The practical outlined should facilitate pupils in formulating their own ideas as to the steps in natural selection and give a clear visual representation of natural selection in action. Additionally, the excel spreadsheet included should be projected onto an IWB and data collected on genotype frequencies to allow pupils to see immediate results and changes within the subpopulations.
AQA B1 (Higher) Revision aid
jings65jings65

AQA B1 (Higher) Revision aid

(11)
Two powerpoints: one double-sided poster summary of the topic (higher tier), the other is a double-sided question template that maps onto the poster summary. Class sets of the poster summary and question template to be printed out (poster summaries could be laminated for extended use). Students can use the poster as much or as little as they like to help answer the questions. The idea is for students to be able to visualise the answers to questions when it comes to exam time with respect to their position on the poster. Mark scheme included.

Optimal Foraging / Predator Feeding Strategies

(0)
This project was designed as a stand alone practical investigation into predator feeding strategies and behaviour for a high ability Yr8 group towards the end of the year. The project incorporates biological modelling, mathematical formulae, practical investigation, evaluative skills, and a great deal of higher thinking - it is not a lesson for the faint-hearted. Included here are lesson plans (2-3 lessons), a powerpoint, pupil booklet, and a spreadhseet of example results which is useful projected onto an IWB
