2D Shapes Matching Set (Circle cards)

2D Shapes Matching Set (Circle cards)

What’s included? This download includes seven A4, portrait pdf sheets to make a 2D shape matching set featuring x36 cards (2D shapes to name, count (the sides of) and match to the correct name). There are x4 cards included which clearly list the pairs of shapes (pictures and names) - these are on page 4 of the download. Learners could use these to help them or refer to them after they have completed the matching activity to see how many they have matched correctly independently. How to use this resource This matching activity has been designed to be an activity for an individual or group where the circles are cut up, shuffled and displayed either loosely on a table top/carpet or already attached on the ring. Learners then look at each 2D shape image and (if they are able) name this. Learners can also count the number of sides of each shape and match the picture to the name label to complete the set. Once the set is matched into pairs (images and labels together) learners can then order the pairs from the least number of sides to the most (or vice versa!) 2D shapes included are oval, ellipse, semi circle, circle, triangle, equilateral triangle, right-angled triangle, square, rectangle, trapezium, parallelogram, rhombus, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon. This 2D shape matching set could also be used as a reference resource for learners e.g. to help remember the number of sides and/or cross-check the name/spelling of individual shapes if unsure when writing these down. This ‘shape match’ set could also be used for a variety of ways, both inside and outdoors (especially if laminated to improve durability in all types of weather!) Hide and seek match could make a fun game where one half of the set (e.g. all the 2D shape pictures cards or all the name label cards) are missing and learners need to find them and match them up. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Suggestion I recently purchased some brightly coloured plastic keyrings which can be easily opened by unclipping the plastic (as seen on the main resource image). Alternatively string or thin ribbon would work well. If a small piece of velcro was attached to both ends of string/ribbon with some strong glue this would help learners to be more independent using this resource. What’s included? This download includes seven A4, portrait pdf sheets to make a number matching set featuring x40 cards (Rainbow Dots to count and numerals from 1 to 20 to match). How to use this resource These circles are designed to be joined together using a plastic clip/string or ribbon (maybe fastened with velcro for easy opening). The numeral cards (like number fans) can be used in a variety of situations including on-the-carpet questioning with the whole class/smaller groups where pupils can show their answers instead of speaking. However these have been designed to be a counting activity for an individual or group where circles are cut up, shuffled and displayed either loosely on a table top/carpet or already attached on the ring (shuffled or in order). Learners then count the rainbow dots on each card and find the matching numeral (or vice versa!). Once complete (or ‘as they go’ if working ‘in order’) learners can then order the numeral and picture cards together to create a complete set from 1 to 20 or backwards depending on the focus. These could also be used as a reference resource for learners e.g. to help count and order numbers and/or cross-check the correct orientation of individual numbers if unsure when writing. This ‘number match’ set could also be used for a variety of games and to accompany and involve learners during counting rhymes and songs, usable both inside the classroom and outdoors (especially if laminated to improve durability in all types of weather!) What’s included? x4 sheets, landscape orientation, pdf format. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for pupils in the early years, years one and two as well as older students who would benefit from investigating the concept of ‘symmetry’ and ‘symmetrical’ or students needing additional learning support. What’s it for? This resource has been designed to encourage learners to investigate the lines of symmetry for all x26 capital letters of the alphabet! This also provides an opportunity to explore capital letters which in turn should help with letter recognition for younger learners or those who would benefit with becoming more familiar with shape and features unique to each capital letter. How to use it? The resource has been designed for learners to investigate the lines of symmetry by cutting out one letter at a time. Learners can either use a safety mirror and/or fold these squares to investigate where the lines of symmetry are. It is best if learners only ‘cut’ once they are sure they have found a solid line of symmetry - a (safety!) mirror would definitely be helpful as a back up to check especially if letters have already been cut up! Resource Details… Learners will need a pair of scissors each to begin this activity. Page 1. At the top are ‘larger’ capital letters, each within a dotted box - these dots guide where to cut. Learners can cut out one of these larger letters at a time (to avoid having lots of letters in front of them at once and risk losing some). Learners will need a pair of scissors each to begin this activity. Along the length of base side of the sheet is a set of smaller capital letters designed to be cut with two simple snips (vertically up to the red line and then horizontally) to separate these from the sheet one at a time. These are designed to be used to record findings (answers) - on page 2. The larger capital letters can go into the bin after they have been cut up, folded and investigated. Page 2. Pupils will need a pencil to their write their name at the base of page 2 and access to a glue stick to continue their investigation using page 2. Once learners have investigated and discovered which letters are symmetrical they can snip and stick the smaller capital letters (at the base of page 1) onto either the left or right of page 2 - depending on whether they are/are not symmetrical. Page 3 clearly shows which capital letters are/are not symmetrical, this is intended to be a reference sheet for learners once they have completed their investigation. Page 4 also clearly shows which capital letters are/are not symmetrical, but in more detail - including where the actual lines of symmetry are. For learners who might find the concept of symmetry difficult they can use page 4 (instead of page 1) to explore for themselves where to fold to investigate ‘symmetry’ with support. What’s included? This download includes two pages (x2 A4 sheets, portrait orientation) featuring one word search for 3D shapes and related words (page 1) and the answers - clearly showing where all words are hidden (page 2). Who’s it for? This simple, clear resource has been carefully designed to encourage young learners with reading in the early years, especially pupils in years one and two as well as students needing additional learning support. Knowing these 3D shape names (and related words) is an important part of maths throughout school and in the wider world. This word search makes the spellings clear and introduces/reinforces shape related vocabulary. Resource layout The word search letters are arranged in a x10 by x10 square grid and featuring easy to read size 25 ‘Sassoon Infant Std’ font. The 3D shape names (and related words) have been organised into four groups of four, positioned below the word search. There are x17 words to find in total as a ‘bonus word’ is also included. These words are hidden horizontally (backwards not forwards), vertically (up as well as down) and diagonally. Words to find are base, face, edge, flat, curved, round, sphere, cone, cube, cuboid, prism, cylinder, pyramid, straight, vertex, hemisphere also (the bonus word) ‘solid’. The extra ‘bonus word’ can be found by answering this question - What are all 3D shapes? Answer - All 3D shapes are solid. This question (and answer) is at the base of each sheet. Recommendations I recommend that learners use a ‘highlighter’ style pen when finding the hidden words as highlighters enable all letters to remain visible once each word has been identified. Some letters have been used more than once (for different words) so all letters need to remain visible (if words are instead ‘crossed out’ this makes the letters harder to read and identify). Useful for… I find word searches like this good for a range of uses including as an introduction to a topic, follow on activity for early finishers, a related fun approach to a topic themed focus and as an engaging homework task, useful in supporting reading, spelling and maths. I hope this resource will be useful to range of educators including parents, support workers, additional and special needs assistants, tutors and teachers. Online learning This resource is also ideal to upload and use in on-line classrooms, such as Sherpa. I recommend that each number is laminated before punching a hole and threading onto a keyring - this is included in the instructions on the pdf. What’s included? This download includes seven A4, portrait pdf sheets to practise counting objects, sorting (colours) and data handling - transferring the information collected to a clear, simple bar chart. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details There are x7 sheets in total. Two sets of x3 - a colour and black and white version of the same resource plus a sheet of ‘paper Skittles’ to cut up and sort/count (if you don’t want to risk your learners eating their learning!) This activity is organised around one random amount (portion) of Skittles - each learner will need their own portion. Learners could be given a real Skittles or ‘paper/cardboard Skittles’. On the bar chart there is space for up to x16 Skittles of one colour so the amount of Skittles given to learners can be any number to fit their ability, however no more than x16 of any one colour group if you intend for learners to use the bar chart (pages 3/5). Page 1 Learners are to sort their portion of Skittles into x5 colour groups (red, orange, yellow, green and purple). Learners then count the number of Skittles in each group and write the total in each colour group ‘total’ box. Page 2 Using the information recorded on page 1 learners then transfer this information to the simple, clear bar chart. Learners can colour the same number of ‘colour’ boxes for each colour group of Skittles. Page 3 Using the information gathered through completing the activities on pages 1 and 2 the questions on page 3 are related to the same number (portion) of Skittles. All colour-names are printed clearly at the top of page 3 so that learners don’t need to think about colour-word spellings. Questions are related to ‘most’, ’least’, ’the same’, ’the difference between’, ’odd’ and ‘even’ numbers. This download includes seven A4, portrait pdf sheets to practise counting up to 30, sorting (colours) and data handling - transferring the information collected to a clear, simple bar chart. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details There are x7 sheets in total. Two sets of x3 - a colour and black and white version of the same resource plus a sheet of ‘paper Smarties’ to cut up and sort/count (if you don’t want to risk your learners eating their learning!) This activity is organised around one tube of Smarties - each learner will need a tube each! Learners could be given a real tube with either real or ‘paper/cardboard Smarties’ inside. See attachment included to cut out and give your learners a random selection of paper Smarties instead. I have found tubes of Smarties have an average of x30 Smarties per tube but if you are giving learners paper/cardboard Smarties this really can be any number of course to fit their ability. The maximum number of one colour of Smarties which will fit on to the bar chart is 12. Page 1 Learners are to sort the Smarties in the tube into x8 colour groups (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink and brown). Learners then count the number of Smarties in each group and write the total in each colour group ‘total’ box. Page 2 Using the information recorded on page 1 learners then transfer this information to the simple, clear bar chart. Learners can colour the same number of ‘coloured boxes for each colour group of Smarties. There is space on the bar chart for up to 12 Smarties (for each colour group). Page 3 Using the information gathered through completing the activities on pages 1 and 2 the questions on page 3 are related to the same tube/number of Smarties. All colour-names are printed clearly at the top of page 3 so that learners don’t need to think about colour-word spellings. Questions are related to ‘most’, ’least’, ’the same’, ’the difference between’, ’odd’ and ‘even’ numbers. What’s included? This download includes five A4, portrait pdf sheets to investigate ‘2D shapes and their properties’, presented as a ‘workbook’ for learners to complete through investigation. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details The six 2D shapes investigated in this workbook are a circle, triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon and hexagon. Page 1 is the ‘workbook’ cover and includes a clear space for learners to write their name. There is related 2D shape information included on the cover for learners to read as well as a visual list of what learners will need to complete the workbook - to encourage autonomy. Pages 2 and 3 include six sets of questions (one set for each shape) all in the same layout. Learners are to complete this information so that the information becomes clear, accurate) facts about each shape. Where learners do not know the information (to complete these questions) they can investigate each shape using the clear picture provided and count e.g. the number of sides of each shape and ‘circle’ the corners/vertices to complete the information. To complete these pages there are ‘2D shape names’ to cut out on page 4 (along the right hand side) which learners should be made aware of (dotted lines indicate where to cut). An adult could pre-cut these x6 shape names for those learners who struggle with using scissors/find cutting frustrating/demotivating. Pages 4 and 5 include the same information (as pages 1 and 2) completed in the same layout for learners to check their findings. There are also some ‘quick match’ questions at the very end of page 5 to recap what they have learnt. Suggestion It would be most helpful for learners to have access to a tangible set of these 2D shapes to pick up and investigate to complete this workbook. What’s included? This download includes two A4, portrait pdf sheets to label x7 ‘2D shapes and their properties’ on the Robot’s control panel. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details The seven 2D shapes investigated in this activity are a semi-circle, circle, triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon and hexagon. Page 1 features the Robot’s ‘control panel’ which has been enlarged from page 2 to provide space for learners to label the different properties of each shape. The dotted lines on page 1 indicate where learners should position the different labels. Learners do not cut out any part of page 1! Page 2 includes four sets of labels (there are exactly the correct amount of labels provided to complete each 2D shape featured). The labels included are the names of the shapes, the number of sides each shape has, the number of vertices each shape has, whether the shapes have ‘curved’ sides (only two do - the circle and semi circle). The green ticks can be stuck next to these two shapes. All labels have dotted lines indicating where to cut. An adult could pre-cut the labels for those learners who struggle with using scissors/find cutting difficult/demotivating. Suggestion It would be most helpful for learners to have access to a tangible set of these x7 2D shapes to pick up and investigate while completing this activity especially for learners who do not know the information (to complete the labels). What’s included? x5 sheets, portrait orientation, pdf format. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for pupils in years one and two as well as older students who need to revisit this or students needing additional learning support. This may be suitable for children in EYFS. What’s it for? This resource has been designed to encourage learners to investigate the various lines of symmetry within x8 2D shapes. How to use it? The learner can explore lines of symmetry in two ways, either using a pencil and ruler or cutting out the shapes and folding them to investigate the lines of symmetry. Suggestion I would encourage learners to investigate the lines of symmetry within these 2D shapes by first cutting out the shapes (using the colour/black and white version designed for this - see pages 3 and 4). Once pupils have investigated these by folding they could then use pages 1/2 (colour/black and white) to record their findings with a pencil and ruler. Using safety mirrors along side cutting and folding AND when recording the ‘answers’ (using a pencil and ruler) will really help pupils to become clear and accurate in their mind as to whether they have found the line of symmetry. Important… Pupils should be encouraged to find the middle/centre of each shape first and ensure that they fold/draw a line ‘through’ this centre point in order to be accurate in their findings. Answers are included on page 5 in the same format which learners can use for quick, easy reference. Resource Details… lines of symmetry (or recording ‘answers after investigation) using a pencil and ruler in colour (page 3) and black and white (page 4). Pupils will need a pencil and a ruler each. What’s included? This download includes four A4, landscape pdf sheets to practise ‘counting objects and ordering numbers to 10’. This activity has been designed to use with miniature ‘Easter chicks’ as pictured in the photos. These sheets are intended to be printed onto card to improve durability (and usability!) How to use this resource This resource has been designed to be a ‘table top’ activity for learners to explore independently. There are two pages featuring green boxes with different amounts of eggs (between 0 and 10) on each. Learners are to count out the corresponding number of Easter chicks onto each of these eggs (pictured on the cards). There is a sheet featuring ‘numbered eggs’. These are intended to be cut out and used to ‘label’ the groups of chicks once they have been counted out. I have included ‘egg holder’ (with grass pictured on each base) which ‘hold’ each numbered egg. These resources were designed for an adult to pre-cut all items so that all items can be presented to learners as a crisp, fresh new activity to investigate and explore. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details Page 1 includes x11 numbered eggs (0-10) with dotted lines around the outside of each to guide cutting. There are two boxes at the top which can both be cut out and displayed with the activity to guide learners/support adults with what the activity is for and questions to ask/think about to learners them on task. Pages 2 and 3 include x11 rectangular boxes (with green outlines), each displaying a different number of eggs between 0 and 10. The idea is that these are cut out and placed on a table top along with a shallow bowl of ‘Easter chicks’ for learners to use to count out the matching number of chicks onto each egg. An adult could pre-cut the numbers for those learners who struggle with using scissors/find cutting frustrating/demotivating. Who’s it for? Resource Details Dotted guide lines show where to cut and two washing lines are provided to fit all the clothes on (it might be a squeeze but they should all fit!) This resource has been designed for pupils in years one and two as well as early years children or older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details Counting in 2’s Rabbit Cards Page 1 includes x15 cards each featuring one rabbit (with two ears!) and a ‘two’s number’ underneath. Cards on page one are from 2 - 30. Page 2 includes a ‘0’ card, a ‘blank’ (replacement) card and an additional ’24’ card - to be used to play the ‘Carrot game’. These Counting in 2’s Rabbit Cards can be used on their own to practise ordering numbers (counting in twos) and have been designed to pair with the x4 ‘Carrot Game’ boards. Carrot Game Boards (Counting in 2’s) For four players though one learner could use these on their own to practise matching - counting in 2’s (also using the ‘Counting in 2’s Rabbit Cards’. Carrot Game - Instructions Needed to play game… One board (A-D) per player (x4 boards total) One set of ‘Counting in 2’s Rabbit Cards’ (AND one extra ’24’ card) To prepare - cut up, shuffle and place 'Counting in 2’s Rabbit Cards’ face down in a grid. How to play… Players take turns to select one card from the grid. If selected card fits into either the ‘upper’ or ‘lower’ sequence (above/below ‘grass’ on board) player keeps and positions this card on their board. The player then has another turn. If that card does not fit either sequence on the player’s board the card is returned and it is the next players turn. WINNER matches all (x4) 2’s cards correctly first! What’s included? This download includes a game (for up to x6 players) to practise ‘counting in 2’s’ (up to 50) using pairs of socks as a helpful visual guide. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one and two as well as older students needing additional learning support. To play this game the two resources included are both needed. Resource 1 details *Counting in 2’s ‘Sock number cards’ x5 ‘landscape orientation’ pdf sheets. The layout of all pages includes x3 rows and x4 columns of boxes each with pairs of socks from 0 to 50 (counting in 2’s). Before playing the game these are to be cut up (using the dotted guidelines), shuffled and placed face down in a grid to play the game. Printing these cards onto card (instead of paper!) will prevent the numbers being visible through the paper when placed face down to play the game (helping to increase ‘fairness’ and eliminate cheating!) Resource 2 *‘Washing Line Game Boards’ x6 ‘portrait orientation’ pdf sheets (x6 different colours - red/yellow/green/blue/purple/pink). The layout includes x3 rows and x3 columns of boxes on/in which to place a ‘Counting in 2’s Sock card’ as if socks are hanging on the washing line. Simple instructions (as well as what is needed to play the game) are included at the top of every ‘Washing Line’ game board. How to play the Washing Line Game take turns to select one sock number card from the grid collect and keep (on washing line board) sock cards which count in 2’s in sequence, for example… 6/8/10 (on the top washing line) and 22/24/26 on the lower washing line replace cards to the grid that don’t fit the chosen 2’s sequence and pass play to the next player first player to collect two sequences of three ‘Counting in 2’s’ wins! Game tips Remembering where exactly players return 2’s number cards to the grid will increase players chances of winning! to increase winning chances encourage players NOT to choose to keep the ‘same’ cards (showing the same sequence of counting in 2’s) as other players are collecting. Choosing to keep a different set of 2’s numbers is more likely to be a wiser, quicker way to win! There are not enough of every sock number card for everyone to successfully choose and use the same sock number cards for their sequences.
