For display to remind children of key features of a recount.

I developed these spelling journals years ago after a course gave me the inspiration and I have used them with my pupils ever since. The idea is that they put in words the teacher has highlighted in their work as misspelled in with their writing tasks but they can also be used for class spelling lists as well. The children take ownership by practicing the 5 or ten words through the week, either at home or during school time. The teacher just checks them at the end of the week/when they know all the words and either puts a smiley face in the end column or an arrow. The arrow means that that word gets transferred to the next page to be practiced another week. I have re jazzed these to share.

Complete with 8 thought provoking landscapes or images, this creative writing activity guides parents/teachers/children through the steps to describe a setting. Clear, step by step instructions and planning sheet included, the children are guided to use their senses and features of descriptive writing - MAPSO (metaphors, alliteration, personification, similes and onomatopoeia). Read a non-chronological report about elephants. Answer simple questions about the text. Use the poster to locate features of non-chronological reports. Sort facts into groups and give each group a sub-title. Use the poster on sentence openers and conjunctions to combine facts, using the grouped facts as a plan to write their own non-chronological report about elephants.
