Five activities that work well for KS2 children in English looking at Fireworks night. Includes: defining the meaning of words, reading for understanding and creating written pieces themselves.

Guided reading sessions that are used with Year 5 children. These are used as a whole class activity, initially reading through the text with children before then getting them to answer questions that check their understanding of language before picking out key facts and inferring from the text. N.B. I did not create this structure but saw it used elsewhere. These are just question sheets I have made that follow a successful strategy.

A fun activity involving nouns that children can complete. Each template has a building layout and a structure that children have to follow to build it up e.g. common noun, proper noun, abstract noun or pronoun. They will take a noun grid and cut up the examples, sticking correct examples to the correct building block until they have finished the 'construction' of their noun building. Two worksheets on adverbial clauses that get children to think more deeply about subordinating conjunctions and clauses rather than just identifying them or creating sentences using them. A good mastery tool for those children who are working comfortably within the Year 5 and 6 curriculum.

A text that looks at the story of St George and how he defended the Christian faith against the Emperor of Nicomedia that then includes three sets of 10 differentiated questions related to the text.

A display poster/ grid that can be made for children to stick in their book that includes some of the key features for 6 different text types in writing: Newspaper reports, Information texts, Discussion, Persuasion, Narrative and Instructions. These can be used for children to make comparisons between text types, to self-assess whether they have included the key features or simply as a reminder of some of the different key features.
