Five lessons that focus on being able to calculate the area of quadrilaterals and compound shapes.
Included is:
A fully-resourced double lesson that focuses on the objective of finding the area of quadrilaterals, with a particular focus on squares and rectangles.
Included in the resource is:
A double lesson PowerPoint that includes an arithmetic starter for each lesson, key vocabulary and areas to model and discuss as well as then having some guided practice for children to work through to check their understanding.
This is then followed up by an independent practice activity and challenge questions for those that finish. These are planned to run over the two lessons with the first lesson potentially taking more teaching time and the second lesson giving more time for practice and challenges. Answer sheets are included for both.
All attachments are uploaded as PowerPoints so they can be easily adapted, especially in adapting to any misconceptions or needs that arise from the first lesson.

The lesson presentation includes a recap from a previous lesson (can easily be omitted if you want this lesson as a one off) before then looking at the important parts of a plant in transporting water and how this happens.
This is then followed by an independent activity that requires children to apply what has been discussed by labelling the parts involved and describing the process. This is then followed by a challenge question to provide the chance to reason. An answer sheet and support sheet are also included. This is then followed up with an experiment to end using white carnations and food colouring to show water transportation.

These can be used either as questions to do as a class or to print and get children to work through at different points.
Within the presentation, there are representations using Base 10, numerical representations and sentences. Three differentiated worksheets that focus on non-finite clauses for children in either Year 5 or 6. Activities start with children being able to identify non-finite clauses before moving on to including them and then writing their own sentences that include non-finite clauses.
Perfect for back to school - Use these as a fun activity to get to know the children in your class. Each question gets children thinking and can require them to justify their decision. Questions can include set criteria e.g. cleaning the toilet with your toothbrush and then having to use it.
Some are simply silly, fun questions whilst some will offer deep insight into the nature of individuals.

Whilst they can be used at the start of the year as a fun way to get to know individuals, they can also be used throughout the year. Have a day a week where one is used, getting children to do a straw poll with hands up and then discussing or getting children to write on a whiteboard and a reason why. They could also record them in a notebook to show their thinking.
These can also be taken further by getting children to think of their own, getting them to think about questioning and ensuring that the two topics are related to one another and have a similar level of reward/ punishment with these then becoming discussion points.
