Three differentiated resources used with Year 5 children to work on antonyms and synonyms. The first activity requires children to find five antonyms and five synonyms for each word listed. The second activity begins with a similar activity to the first activity, before moving on to a passage where children have to replace the underlined words with synonyms. The third activity starts with an activity where children have to replace the underlined words with synonyms before moving on to a passage where they have to pick out words they can replace with synonyms.

This 22 page booklet looks at a range of aspects, getting children to work through questions related to areas of grammar and in being able to use a dictionary accurately. It is perfect for 5-10 minute bursts during register time or can be used as an extended activity for a lesson if plans have fallen through/ changed, with children able to pick it up as and when.

A comprehensive set of resources for anyone to be able to teach a block on writing discussion texts. Planned for Year 5 but very easily adaptable to Year 4 or Year 6. Included are: Full lesson plans for 15/16 lessons, with differentiated activities for children. IWB slides for every lesson that go step by step through the lesson. (N.B. In the shared writing sessions, the example paragraphs just need playing around with to a new topic. Whilst I could have done these, it is more powerful to do them with the class at the time) Resource sheets required for lessons. Word banks for children to use. A self-assessment/ teacher assessment marking sheet that helps children assess as they write and can then be used for a simple marking sheet to pick out positives and targets for children.

An activity that looks at being able to create a fast food business with children. This activity can be done over a day or over a number of days/ weeks through discrete sessions. In groups they will allocate themselves roles and take responsibility for different aspects of the business. This all ends in children having to show their advert and pitch, with one group being crowned the winner at the end. N.B: Children will need filming equipment for their advert whether it be a camera or iPad. Any fast food advert will do for the advert example. Any example pitch from the Apprentice will work appropriately.

Four differentiated worksheets that get children to look at different aspects of grammar within a sentence and the way they are made up, using particular colours for particular features. The first sheet gets children to simply identify the subject, predicate and any punctuation within the sentence using three different colours. The second sheet looks at the same three features as well as then moving on to getting children to look for fronted adverbials using a different colour. The third sheet looks at the features above and gets children to identify subordinate clauses within a sentence as well. The fourth sheet then gives children sentences that they need to start with a fronted adverbial before giving children sentences that they must add a subordinate clause to, playing around with the position of clauses afterwards. Attached is also the powerpoint that was used for the lesson as well.

A number of resources that help children work towards creating their own instructions through creating potions in a more engaging manner using Harry Potter as an example. Lessons can include using the books and films to engage children with the ideas from the stories before then looking at writing instructions themselves. Included are: a word mat for a range of potion items that could be used; a word mat for a range of imperative verbs and time connectives and three different examples of instructions for creating potions that can be seen in the Harry Potter books and films. This includes then looking at making changes from the original instructions in the same way that can be seen in The Half Blood Prince through Snape's notes that make changes to the instructions (task for higher ability children).
