Hello! I believe in making life easier for teachers, which is why I make my resources available on TES for free, or at a low cost. Most of my resources are full schemes of work, so when you make a purchase you're investing in entire units, not just one-off work sheets. Feedback is welcome! As I evolve in my teaching career, I hope to update my resources as well, so keep checking in. :)

Powerpoint Presentations to aid in teaching Macbeth to GCSE students. Complete lessons introducing themes and analysis of the play. Please feel free to use and adapt. Year 7 Writing to Imagine, Explore, Entertain

(43)
The first part of a creative writing for Year 7 students. Students assess their own writing skills, and then build these skills up. Sentence types, punctuation, grammar, vocabulary and literary devices. Can be adapted to suit ability (I am aiming it here at writing levels 4 - 6). I hope to add the rest of this unit soon; the focus will be on poetry for the latter half of the unit.

Introduction to Shakespeare: Lessons and Worksheet

(13)
Resources for a SOW introducing KS3 students to context and works of William Shakespeare. Students experiment with speaking Shakespearean English, and build confidence with the language. No one play is studied in depth, but rather a selection of his works are briefly discussed and key scenes are read through. (Included here are bits I think I left out from Part 1. If anything is missing that is referred to in PPTs, do e-mail me and I can send you what you need)

Year 7 Language Unit: Canterbury Tales

(35)
A collection of resources that I've used to help teach an introduction to the history of the English language - focus is on The Canterbury Tales. Assessment task is a comparision of the Miller and the Knight. Links in PPTs worked as of Feb 2012. I make use of Canterbury Tales play as well (not included here). Apologies for any errors.

The unit itself is meant to allow students to experiment with speaking Shakespearean English, and to build their confidence. No one play is studied in depth, but rather a selection of his works are briefly discussed and key scenes are read through.

Private Peaceful Scheme of Work Resources

(21)
Part 2: The last 7 lessons for a unit on Private Peaceful. Scheme of Work with Powerpoint Presentations for each lesson. Final assessment was a Speaking and Listening task, but it could easily be adapted to include a writing assessment. There is one electronic resource missing here, as I did not scan the second text. You'll need a copy of &'All Quiet on the Western Front&'; - I took a section of the text, in which the narrator describes a gas attack.
Private Peaceful Resources Part 1
krista_carsonkrista_carson

Private Peaceful Resources Part 1

(48)
The first 8 lessons for a unit on Private Peaceful. I found the SOW online, adapted it slightly, and created PPTs to accompany the scheme, so I cannot take full credit for each individual lesson. It worked quite well with my top set year 8 group, and they really enjoyed our study of the novel. Final assessment for my group was a Speaking and Listening task, but it could easily be adapted to include a writing assessment, or you could create your own.

KS3 - KS4 Poetry Transition Unit (Love)

(16)
The following resources were created as part of a transition unit at the end of KS3. It is meant to revise skills for reading, annotating and analyzing poetry in preparation for the new WJEC English spec. Skills studied in this unit are meant to aid in critical analysis and essay writing. There is also a Speaking and Listening task, which should be assessed using GCSE specifications.

'Day of the Triffids' by John Wyndham: Resources

(14)
Resources used with whole class reading of the class novel, included a reading and writing (media) assessment. Requires DVD copies of the 1981 BBC Version of the book, as well as the more recent 2009 BBC Version. Class has used the abridge novel, so resources are based on that version.

Writing to Describe/Creative Writing Part 2

Writing to Describe/Creative Writing Part 2

(11)
The second part of lessons, for my unit on descriptive writing. The assessment involves students creating a piece of descriptive writing about a homeless person in a big city (Cambridge specifically here, but you can change this). I am currently using with my year 9s, but will likely adapt to use with year 10s as well, in terms of producing descriptive writing coursework. Could also easily be changed to aid in narrative writing, if you tweaked it.
Writing to Describe / Creative Writing: Part 1

Writing to Describe / Creative Writing: Part 1

(71)
The focus of the unit is around issues of homelessness, so accompanying the unit is a class reading of Robert Swindell's novel ‘Stone Cold’. The assessment, however, isn’t on ‘Stone Cold’, but is on a creative writing piece, that uses description (so not narration) to describe a homeless person in Cambridge (but this can be changed to any city or town, really). The novel is merely being read to them so that they can use it to help them feel empathy etc. I have shown my groups clips from the film ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ as well, to help get their minds working about issues of homelessness.
A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens: SOW

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens: SOW

(88)
A resource with lesson presentations and activities for My Year 8 unit on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Students work towards an essay assessment, which requires them to analyse how Scrooge changes after each visit by the ghosts. I&'ve updated these lessons recently (Nov 2010) to be a little clearer and easier to follow. The assessment task sheet is also better (in my opinion). Enjoy :) Also, I&';ve saved them as PPTs in the 97-2003 format, so that those not working on Vista/7 can access (I hope!)
A View from the Bridge: Act 2
krista_carsonkrista_carson

A View from the Bridge: Act 2

(4)
This powerpoint goes through Act 2 of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge small sections at a time. After each scene there are comprehensive questions, which are meant to build student understanding of plot, themes, and characterization. There are a few activities mixed in the middle as well, including a task to create a ‘Jeremy Kyle’ style skit. At the end, there is also an opportunity to exlpore the themes, giving points and then finding evidence from the text to support it. This would be essential for revision.
A View from the Bridge: Intro and Act 1
krista_carsonkrista_carson

A View from the Bridge: Intro and Act 1

(19)
The following resource, a powerpoint lesson presentation, goes through an introduction to Arthur Miller's play A View from the Bridge, as well as breaks the first Act down, scene by scene. Each scene is followed by comprehension questions to aid in developing a sense of plot and character. The Word document is a simple character grid, where students record character information and then go on quote quests to find corresponding quotes. I am making my group complete this as we finish each section, with the intention that it will be invaluable to them when revising.
Small Steps by Louis Sachar: Novel Study

Small Steps by Louis Sachar: Novel Study

(19)
A resource with a series of lessons based around a whole class reading of Louis Sachar’s novel ‘Small Steps’. This is only ‘part one’ of the complete unit, going from an introduction where students watch the film HOLES and discuss (Can do a S&L assessment), and then introduce the novel and read Chapters 1 - 7, with comprehension questions and empathetic writing tasks. I will continue to upload as I create the unit.
Macbeth Murder Mystery: Drama Activity

Macbeth Murder Mystery: Drama Activity

(13)
I didn’t create the idea, but I’ve revised it a bit and created a PowerPoint presentation that you can use with the handouts that I’ve borrowed from another user. This worksheet provide all the information needed to run a Macbeth Murder Mystery and use drama activity to teach a range of dramatic techniques including use of flashback. I’ve used this with my year 8 group, but it can likely be applied to most KS3 groups.
Found Poetry Activity

Found Poetry Activity

(3)
I initially created this to fill a cover lesson, during an absense. It’s a fun activity to do with KS3 students, to get them to warm up to the idea of producing poetry, without the pressure of writing it entirely on their own. It requires old newspapers, scissors, and glue. Details are all contained in the PPT, which acts as a lesson plan.
