NEW (9-1) Edexcel IGCSE English Language A Exam Practice

(1)
This is 2-3 lessons worth of work, guiding pupils through Section A of the new spec. IGCSE (Edexcel) English Language A Paper. Due to the lack of practice papers for the new IGCSE specification, I have created this to give my class some exam practice. The resource includes an exam paper in the style of the iGCSE English Language A specification (Section A only). It uses a newspaper article as the unseen non-fiction extract. (I have only included 500 words of the newspaper article, due to copyright, but have cited the link so you can see the full piece.) The anthology piece you will need is 'A Passage to Africa' from the IGCSE anthology. The accompanying ppt. presentation guides pupils through the exam paper and offers example responses.

Beyond the Sky and Earth - Journey into Bhutan Analysis

A series of complete lessons to guide pupils’ analysis of ‘Beyond the Sky and Earth’ - Jamie Zeppa. This is aimed at preparing them for question 4 of the Edexcel iGCSE English Language paper. The slides offer a variety of different tasks to support pupils with annotating the extract, analysing the language and structure and writing an effective exam response. Clear learning objectives and opportunities for AfL have been built in, but can easily be adapted to suit your classes.

Do not go gentle into that good night - Dylan Thomas Analysis

A lesson on ‘Do not go gentle into that good night’ by Dylan Thomas. Designed with the Edexcel IGCSE Literature exam in mind, but also works as a stand alone poetry lesson or as an unseen poem. Introduces pupils to the idea of euphemisms and supports them in informing their own personal interpretations. Guides analysis, but encourages independence.

'La Belle Dame Sans Merci' - Keats Analysis Lessons

Guides students through the analysis and annotation of Keats’ ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci’. Offers explanation of Romanticism as introduction to the poem’s context and to develop analysis. This leads onto an optional comparison with Blake’s ‘The Tyger.’ Designed with the Edexcel iGCSE English Literature exam in mind, but can easily be adapted to suit other specs. Includes targeted questioning to check understanding and develop thinking. Suggested annotations are within the notes sections, so they can be differentiated for different classes. I have delivered this lesson successfully to sets 1, 2 and 3 at GCSE level.

Poetry from other Cultures - Unit of Work

(0)
This unit of work takes pupils through 'White Comedy', 'I too Sing, America,' 'Blessing' and 'Island Man.' It helps pupils to analyse each poem and guides them through a comparison. It has bits and pieces taken from others' resources that I have adapted, as well as my own work. I have successfully taught this to high ability year 8 and low ability year 9. For differentiation, I include a scaffolded essay plan, which has helped some of my SEN/EAL pupils. Parts of this are inspired by Phil Beadle's amazing work on 'Island Man' and 'Blessing' (Teachers TV). I really enjoy teaching this unit of work, I hope that others find it useful.

Still I Rise (Edexcel iGCSE Paper 2)

(7)
I created this resource to help guide my GCSE class through the poem 'Still I Rise' by Maya Angelou. They were studying it as part of preparation for a coursework assignment, following a lesson on 'The Story of An Hour' by Kate Chopin. Both texts are from Part 2: Paper 2 Section A Poetry and Prose Texts of the Edexcel International GCSE anthology. (New 9-1 specification.)

Creative Writing inspired by WW1 Poetry - Unit of Work

This scheme of work guides pupils through 'Exposure,' 'Dulce et Decorum Est,' and 'Who's for the Game?' and then uses this context to inspire a piece of creative writing about going over the top in the trenches. The presentation takes pupils through the writing paragraph by paragraph and suggests techniques they can use at each stage. I used it with mid/low ability year 9 pupils. There are bits and pieces taken from others' resources here as well as my own work.
