AQA 7036 - The nature and importance of places: Lesson Powerpoint and Resources
Aimed at the new AQA AS Geography 7036 specification, this resource is a powerpoint presentation which can assist teaching in class for the new 2017 exam. This powerpoint and activity pack for '3.2.1.1 - The nature and importance of places' part of the unit covers the basics in an easy-to-follow powerpoint presentation.
Included in this powerpoint are definitions for the key terms, short activities and focused questions, and links to articles and YouTube clips which are of relevance to the course, and the key concepts such as endogenous & exogenous factors, sense of place, and approaches to place are covered in-depth.
Also included in this resource are possible lesson starters or tasks that can be given as homework:
1.) A Diamond-9 starter activity "Endogenous & Exogenous character of a place", where factors affecting the character of a place have to be sorted by importance and then categorised into Endogenous or Exogenous factors.
2.) A printable mind-map that students can fill in which helps to reinforce the 'Exclusion Groups' topic.
3.) An entertaining starter activity linking to Media Representations where students are given a name of a place and have to describe it using only stereotypical ideas. This can help students to understand how the media representation of a place is never as accurate or as personal as lived experience.
Disclaimer: Although this resource is matched carefully to the specification to try to ensure it matches, no personal responsibility will be taken for the content of this resource, and this is only aimed as a revision or planning tool, not as a substitute for teaching :)
Denary and Binary Conversion homework task
A simple denary-binary and binary-denary task that can be given to students to allow them to develop understanding and reinforce methods by practicing calculations. Calculations are given in a variety of formats, for example a match-up exercise and a construction grid where 1s correspond to black and 0s correspond to white. This is a fun exercise where students have to translate from denary to binary, to reveal an image, and the last question involves a grid where students can construct their own images and share during the next lesson, getting each other to form these.
This is suitable for a GCSE level, however, can be used to challenge G/T students in KS3 and used as a introduction to test understanding at a more advanced AS Level.
The answers to this homework task are included in a separate word document.

Printable Revision Mats for AQA A-level Business Studies (Year 2)
This resource includes two printable A3 mind map/revision mats for the A-Level Year 2 AQA specification - Units 7 and 8 (combined), and Units 9 and 10 (combined). These revision mats were designed for my students as a general overview of the topic to allow for last-minute revision and to identify areas of weakness and strength. These can either be set as a independent activity or used in class as a group work activity. They have been designed to be quite in-depth so cover most course content and my students like to complete these once teaching has finished for a unit and then once again before the exam.
The content of this revision mat focuses on many of the key-terms used throughout the course, as well as including theories and models and calculation questions. The mats are designed to be printed as an A3 page but would work just as well stapled as an A4 booklet.
The resource comes as two pdf documents.

Business - 'Good' vs 'Service' activity revision cards: A Level, GCSE and KS3 resources
33 cards containing a name of a generic product, and an accompanying picture. These can be used to develop the students understanding about the difference between a good and service, and are designed to fit A4 page so they can be printed and/or laminated easily.
Lesson ideas include:
- Printing and asking students in small groups or individually to cut out each and match these into two piles; services and goods. These can then be stuck on large sheets of sugar paper
- As a starter activity where students are asked to split the class up into two depending on whether the card they are given at the start of the lesson is a good or service.
- Cutting out and putting in a bag, folded, and ask students to describe the product on the card without using the explicit name. The rest of the class have to guess what the product is, and whether this is a good or service. This would be a good starter or plenary task to help build on lesson understanding.
These cards are suitable for a KS3 introductory lesson, all the way through GCSE and A-level to act as a starter activity, and can be easily adapted for use in taster sessions. They are relevant to the new AS and A level business 7131/7132 specification, and can be used for teaching the new GCSE 8132.
Included:
33x small printable cards, with a white background, picture and label, at a fit of 3x4 to a page, spanning 3 pages. The downloadable file after purchase is a word document in portrait view.
WATER AND CARBON CYCLES FLASHCARDS: AQA
This resource is a set of comprehensive flashcards covering the water and carbon cycles unit within AQA Geography A Level (new spec).
They ask simple questions covering the unit which help to build knowledge, especially of key terms. Contained is the original word document and a printable PDF. This can be printed on A4 paper and is 4-to-a-page, creating folding flashcards when the page is cut down the centre.
The flashcards provide a brief overview of each topic covered, broken down to fit the AQA specifcation. These include a few short facts on two case studies for the unit: The Amazon Rainforest and the Eden Basin to help students remember key facts, as well as key figures and key terms for the unit.
*Please note: This resource is not approved or endorsed by AQA. Whilst it is designed for use alongside the specification, this is not a guarantee. *
Denary and Hexadecimal Conversion homework task
A simple denary-hexadecimal and hexadecimal-denary task that can be given to students to allow them to develop understanding and reinforce methods by practicing calculations. Calculations are given in a variety of formats, for example a match-up exercise and constructing words out of hexadecimal letters which are converted from their denary equivalent.
This is suitable for a GCSE level, however, can be used to challenge G/T students in KS3 and used as a introduction to test understanding at a more advanced AS Level.
The answers to this homework task are included in a separate word document.
Stakeholder Mapping Activity - Blank maps and labels
In this simple yet effective resource, 5 example businesses are given alongside a blank stakeholder map. As well as this, labels for some of the most common stakeholders are given, and students can cut these out and place them where they feel would be the most appropriate place. This file, in PPT format, can be printed out on A4 or even A3 paper and used a group activity, or can be used as a whole class activity by projecting onto a whiteboard.
After this, one suggested activity is that students swap their stakeholder map with another group and decide if they agree with the positions that the stakeholders are in. This can form part of a class debate or form an evaluative activity.
The can also be used as posters to form part of a wall display after completion from students.
English Creative Writing '5 senses' photo prompts - KS2/KS3/GCSE
This simple but effective resource contains a set of 10 high quality images, in a mind map powerpoint format, with the labels for the 5 senses located around the outside of the picture with a space to write and then the 10 images full screen on each slide for easy printing in a separate powerpoint presentation.
The resource is designed for either printing on A3 or otherwise A4 paper, or to project onto the whiteboard for a whole-class activity. This resource can be used in countless ways and at many different levels. Whilst is is suggested that this is used in secondary with English Language GCSE and at a National Curriculum KS3 level, it can be easily adapted for use in primary schools. For example:
- Split the class into small groups with three or two people per group. At the start of the lesson, give each group a sheet of paper with a picture on, and then tell students to describe the picture and begin to develop a story or descriptive piece of writing. Then, as ideas are shared, the students can begin to make a plan, and by the end of the lesson, students should each have written their own creative writing piece.
- Do a collaborative class planning session! At the start of the lesson, the sheets can be spread around the classroom, and then students can each write one idea per sheet. At the end of the lesson, these can be shared as a class.
- Use the sheets as a homework task, where students are told to find write, for example, a newspaper article about the place shown on the A3 sheet.
- A piece of coloured card could be given to each student where they write one sentence, and this could be turned into a wall display or hanging 'washing line' classroom display.
Stakeholders Crossword (Business Studies GCSE/AS/A Level)
A simple excel document containing a crossword, with answers, where students read the definitions and clues for each stakeholder, and fill the crossword in with the clues given.
Ways that this resource can be used...
Ask the students to complete the crossword as a starter activity (5-10 minutes). Then ask the students to hilight the stakeholders as either internal or external stakeholders of a business. Alternatively, after completing a lesson on stakeholders, use this resource as a plenary activity to summarise knowledge and reinforce lesson understanding.
Who can use this resource?
This resource is designed for any level, and it can easily be incorporated into a wide range of Business Studies qualifications, for example AQA, EdExcel and OCR Business Studies at GCSE and AS/A Level, for example the new AQA AS 7131 qualification.
Summer homework pack - Geography A-Level (AQA) (preparation for geography A-level)
This is a pre-made homework pack with 15 questions in total, covering every topic from A-Level geography. The tasks give short insights into the content covered at AS and A2 on the AQA specification, and are designed to teach students skills such as independent reading and research.
The first page of the document gives a short introduction to the A-level Geography SOW, and students can then choose as many homework tasks as they like with a suggested minimum of 5. The tasks ask students to find definitions to some of the key terms covered under each sub-topic, and complete a series of further tasks, including reading articles, watching YouTube videos, or independent research tasks.
This resource is designed for those moving from GCSE to AS level to help students settle into the new geography specification without overloading them with information! The tasks are designed to be quick but help students familiarise themselves with some of the key A-level themes.
The booklet is designed to be editable, so you can change the first page to the sub-topics that you will be studying.
