AQA World and Lives: England in 1819 Full Lesson - English Literature 2023 Poetry Anthology

(0)
A full lesson on Percy Bysshe Shelley’s sonnet ‘England in 1819’, one of fifteen new poems from the 2023 AQA Poetry Anthology World and Lives cluster of English Literature. This could also be taught to Year 9/KS3 classes as preparation for upcoming GCSEs or as part of a wider unit on Protest/Place poetry. This ready-to-teach lesson includes: A full PowerPoint that introduces the context for England in 1819, as well as example annotations, questions and conversational points. (Teacher notes are available on slides to prompt class discussion). A double-sided worksheet that includes the context, themes grid and quotation grid - which could be set as homework if time allows it. The full poem is not included as part of the worksheet as it is included in the AQA anthology book which is ideal for full annotation if necessary! The lesson can be split into two lessons if needed, with plenty of room to expand on debate topics or work through the key quotations as a class. Both documents are editable if needed, and can be adapted into existing schemes of work or set as an independent cover lesson.

KS3/KS4 Quotation Explosions Worksheet and How-To Guide - In-Depth Analysis for English Literature

(0)
This quotation explosion package is ideal for encouraging KS3/KS4 students to think deeply about a particular text, be it poetry, a play or a novel. This easy-to-follow flowchart uses an example from Macbeth (which students don’t necessarily have needed to have studied in order to understand how the quotation explosion flowchart works) to demonstrate how information can be extracted from a single quotation, and how those ideas can be carried across into a GCSE-style paragraph. This resource is a six-page document that includes the following: A blank, ready-to-use quotation explosion flowchart that can be used again and again for students working on worksheets, or can be glued into exercise books as a reference. An explanation of how to the use the flowchart effectively. An example of how the flowchart has been used to explode a quotation from Shakespeare’s Macbeth. A step-by-step example of how the ideas from the flowchart can be transformed into a full paragraph. An example GCSE-style paragraph response to a question on Macbeth. This resource has been repeatedly used with success in KS3 and KS4 classrooms to help grow student confidence with developing their ideas in relation to quotations from key texts. It is also ideal for low-prior attainers in GCSE to help them memorise quotations and key ideas to talk about in their English Literature exam. This is also a useful exercise for Language Paper 1/2. The PDF and Word versions of the document have been included dependent on user preference.

Lord of the Flies: Lesson One - Context for GCSE Literature

(0)
This resource is for students and teachers of GCSE English Literature. This ‘Lord of the Flies’ first lesson pack is ready-to-teach and includes: One full PowerPoint introducing students to the key contexts and themes of William Golding’s ‘Lord of the Flies’. One four page (two double-sided pages) worksheet to match the activities included in the PowerPoint. The lesson introduces students to the heavy historical context that preceded the creation of Golding’s novel ‘Lord of the Flies’, and includes a creative writing task that allows them to consider the lives and fears of people at the time. The task also feeds the technical skill of creative writing needed for English Language Paper 1. There is also a bullet-pointed breakdown of the key events of Golding’s life that will be referenced throughout the reading of the novel, as well as an introduction to key themes. Plenty of opportunities for thoughtful class discussion throughout. The lesson fills a full hour and has been taught to several classes beforehand. It is completely ready to teach so perfect for last-minute lesson plans or can be adapted into larger schemes of work if needed. If the worksheet is not complete, there is opportunity to set as homework. The worksheet will be available as part of a larger booklet that follows the full scheme of work for the teaching of ‘Lord of the Flies’ that is coming soon to Literateach.
