Speaking mats for GCSE French
11 Speaking mats for each unit that I have made over the years to help my GCSE classes.
By no mean complete but an excellent starting point to help students with productive skills and for Mocks.
I leave the document editable so you can do whatever you want with it :)
AQA French Revision of AS topics
Several activities to revise the 6 AS topics and practise spontaneous speaking.
Articulate Game
4 key ideas
Match up the synonyms
10 questions for each theme
Some useful expressions to give your opinion.
I have written notes under each activity so you know how to best use it but do ask if you are still unsure :)
AQA French GCSE- Unit 1 Me, my family and friends
I have designed this PPT to cover the whole of Unit 1 (Me, my family and friends). It provides explanations and activities and I would advise to use it together with the textbook.
It contains 53 slides to practise:
Adjectival Agreement
Comparatives
Near Future
Simple Future
Possessive Adjectives
I have added a few GCSE styled exercises such as translation and True, False, Not Mentioned.
I have also included a very comprehensive Speaking/ Writing mat which my pupils always find very useful!
If it is popular enough, I will share my PPT for Unit 2 Technology in everyday life.
Enf of year French Quiz
Perfect activity for the dreaded last lesson of French!
A Quiz about France and to some extent the French speaking world.
6 categories (Paris, Pays francophones, Histoire, Art, Langue française, Gastronomie) of 5 questions each.
I use it as a pub quiz, pupils are by team, we go through the questions then the answers and the winning team wins some sweeties.
Aimed at Y9/Y10.
Le reglement scolaire AQA GCSE
A PPT to introduce the school rules (Unit 10 of AQA GCSE).
This lesson comes after the lesson on describing your school so there is a little recap of that at the beginning.
I advise printing slides 2, 4, 6 and 22 as revision aid.
Translation Tips for Y11
A PPT and a supporting worksheet to work on translation with Y11 or able Y10s.
The PPT includes tips to translate into French as well as short translation exercises for each tip.
It can also be used to work on Essay Writing.
La vie saine AQA GCSE
27 slides to practise the topic 6.2 of the new AQA French GCSE Healthy and Unhealthy Living.
Focus on Il faut + infinitive and a quick revision of the imperfect.
The PPT also includes quite a bit of translation which works well with the requirements of the new GCSE.
Please do add a review if you download it :)
Ma maison idéale
A short reading followed by some explanations of the conditional mood on the theme of the ideal house.
Perfect for GCSE.
IGCSE Written Task
A worksheet to help the pupils answering the Written Task in the IGCSE exam (Edexcel or Cambridge) but it can essentially be used for any written task. It is designed to encourage the pupils to use several tenses.
It summarizes:
- the imperfect
- the perfect
- the present
-the near future
- the simple future
I also wrote a paragraph as an example for the pupils.
El Medio Ambiente Crossword
Crossword using some words from the topic "El Medio Ambiente".
The words are written in English and they must write them in Spanish in the crosswords
Ma routine
Worksheet to practice daily routine in French.
List of Adjectives
If you are tired of everything being "super" and "chouette", this list is for your!
El Cuerpo
Nice picture showing different body parts.
3 Grammar Points
This worksheets explains 3 different grammar points that are often challenging for pupils:
1.The difference between 'muy&' and &';mucho'
2. The possessive &'de&';
3. Toda/o/as/os
I made it for my Spanish Ab Initio students but I reckon it can be used for GCSE pupils.
Perfect Tense
Small worksheet, can be used as a starter activity, to consolidate the perfect tense.
The DOM-TOM (overseas departments)
I have created this worksheet to introduce the DOM-TOM. I believe it is important for the pupils to know that France is not only the 'metropolitan France'.
I first asked the pupils to number the departments and at home or in the IT room, look on the internet and write on the map where each of them is located
Then, I asked the pupils to prepare a PPT by pair or group of 3 on one department including language, food, main city, population, pictures etc.
Using 'para'
Simple translation exercise to teach the pupils how to use PARA. I used it with my IB Spanish Ab Initio but I'm sure it could suit GCSE pupils.
Grammar Worksheet
I created this worksheet after marking essays to prevent the pupils from making the same mistakes again and again. 1. They must find the mistakes and correct the sentences. 2. They must translate the sentences into French.
A Song by Stromae (Formidable)
This song has a great success with Y10 and is much more appropriate than other Stromae's songs in terms of lyrics.
This is how I used the song:
1. A bit of background on Stromae.
2. Listen to the song and try to understand which words are missing (I wrote them in a box on the right in a random order)
3.Translate each word in English in the box.
4. Some paragraphs have been translated in English. Try to match them up!
5. Chantons ensemble! (Only if you feel like it!)
KS3 French - Animals
For this game, divide the class into 2 teams or 3 if it's a big group.
You need to start the slide show for it to work.
Then, the first group start....'C 1: J&'ai un chien'. You click on the picture '3 points'.
Then group 2 etc.
And finally, you add up all the points that they got to know which team won.
Kids love it, they always think that the number of points is related to the picture but not at all, it is completely random!
You can practice other grammar points, negative sentences etc. Enjoy!
