Steel Pan 101 - an original curriculum for Jumbie Jam pans and Steel Pan.
Whether you are new to pans, or in need of some fresh ideas, this curriculum is for you.
After living and teaching in the Caribbean for several years, we have created Steel Pan 101- Level One, a complete guide to teaching the pans, with: 22 pieces, backing tracks, assessment rubrics, Learning Objective ‘I Can’ statements, Essential Questions, and Teacher Guidance Notes, to help other educators to teach the steel pan. With over 120 pages of material, this curriculum has a lot to offer.
Written with the Jumbie Jam pans specifically in mind, Level One takes students through the first 5 notes of the pan, introducing a variety of rhythms and skills (including improvisation and harmony playing), through Caribbean inspired pieces.
The Essential Questions and ‘I Can’ statements help to organize learning from the very beginning, while the rubric enables you to appropriately assess students at the end of the course. The teacher notes offer guidance on each piece, and on the concepts introduced during the curriculum, as well as further ideas on how to introduce them successfully.
If you’re just getting started with the Jumbie Pans, this is a great place to begin. Check out the Jumbie Jam warm-ups for more ideas on getting started!
