This unit can be approached in several ways. Either as a quick Honey Bee activity that will take about 90 minutes to complete. Or as long, in-depth project that will take upwards of a week or two to complete. In my classroom, creating the basic lantern will take my kiddos about 90 minutes (coloring and assembly). Adding on Bees or Bee life cycle cut-outs will take an additional 45 to 60 minute block of time. I normally have my Kiddos write about each life cycle stage or facts about Bees on the back of the cut-outs. I grew up raising Honey Bees with my Grandfather. However, I strongly recommend teaching and creating each part individually, then putting the whole creation together. With my Kindergartens, I do one step at a time. I like to use shorter teaching sessions so that these cuties do not become an overwhelming project. Now that my Kindergarten have created many lanterns, they are experts and do not need as detailed step by step instructions. Once completed they love making the bunnies hop all around the room. I often have my kiddos create stories about their bunnies.

In my classroom, creating the basic lantern will take my kiddos about 90 minutes (coloring and assembly). Adding on hats, hair, arms, legs and other bits and pieces will take me an additional 45 to 60 minutes.
