The BFG Stand-Alone Lesson - Good for Lower Ability or as Writing Stimulus
A nice simple worksheet that I made to use with a low-ability Y7 group. They really enjoyed the discussion generated after we read a short section of the story and watched the trailer for the new film.
Local Heroes - Nottingham (Introduction Lecture to DH Lawrence and quiz)
A lecture that I made to introduce students to DH Lawrence in a whole year-group lecture (Y9).
I used Jake Bugg's 'Troubled Town' to start the lecture and showed photos from our local area then/now.
Will obviously need adapting if you are not from this area (so I've made it free) but hopefully it will give you some inspiration for a similar unit!
NB I do not own copyright for images used. Educational purposes only.
Knowledge Organiser - Child Writing for Paper 1 AQA A Level English Language CLA
Printable in A3 - makes a great tablemat for exam practice. I have also included this as an additional resource in my example answer, for just 50p more you can get the adpatable knowledge map as well as a practice question and answer.
Thank you and please leave positive feedback if you find this useful!
Lesson on Characterisation of Macbeth Act 1 Scene 2 - Jacobean Hero for Edexcel/AQA Spec
Has been used with a mixed Y10/Y11 group during formal observation.
Three fully comprehensive levels of differentiation implementing the AOs from the new spec.
Fully self-explanatory learning journey for use during or after the reading of the scene. Also extremely useful for revision (extract to whole). Covers ideas about context as well as themes.
AQA Literature Paper 1, Model Answers - Othello
I have compiled these model answers on an “Othello” extract from Act 1, with a full mark model answer, and an Iago question for Section B… Feel free to use however you wish, adapt as a gap fill, chop up, etc.
Supported Distance Learning A Level Literature Feminist Theory Workbook - for NEA AQA Spec B
A fully comprehensive guide to feminist theory. My students are using this as supported distance learning whilst our 6th Form is closed so I thought others may benefit from this too. This is a good bridging module from Y1 to Y2 also.
It is based on, and develops, ideas from the critical anthology from AQA. It also includes the mark scheme and a student example verified at full marks by the exam board. It also has a reading list of both poetry and prose titles and a mark scheme for the NEA task.
I hope you find it useful - you may wish to amend some sections where I discuss prior learning from Y1 as this refers to specific texts e.g. Othello
Brain Gym Starters - Super Fun Settlers for all ages (bell task/ starter/ do now)
Get students settled and engaged in the first seconds of their lessons with these lively ‘do now’ tasks, fully adaptable and themed for every season of the year. All slides have a solution slide which accompanies it. This is a huge 86 slide powerpoint which can be used as part of any different lesson.
Suitable for primary age upwards - even my A Level students love these and I use them at the start of each lesson. There are enough here for you to use throughout the year.
Use the slide at the start of your PPTs as a settler/ice breaker and to get students focused from the start of your sessions.
Each slide has: a picture puzzle, a daily joke, a riddle and a word of the day. There is also a link to the day’s news to be used for tutorial/PSHCEE etc.
These have proven so popular with my students both in remote learning and in the classroom; I hope you enjoy them!
AQA Literature A Level B Full Mock Paper (NEW, in line with pre-release info) Paper 1A
I hope this is useful for your students in prep for their summer exams.
All the questions and the extract are brand new, and the questions for part B link to the extract as they should in the real exam. I have reduced the price as this does not yet include model answers, however I will be producing these shortly and will increase the price when these are added.
Any questions, please let me know. Solidarity with all teachers at this challenging time!

Full Walkthrough and Sources for GCSE English Language Paper 2: Section A Edexcel Reading
Two non-fiction resources and a full step by step guide on each question and precise guidance on times and approaches. Features “Angela’s Ashes” extract by Frank McCourt compared with a linked modern article on the impact of poverty.
A handy template learning journey that you can adapt for any two texts. I photocopy the learning journey in colour on A3 with the two A4 sources side by side on the reverse. It normally takes 3/4 lessons the first time round and then you can get faster and faster.
Could also very easily be adapted for AQA or other exam boards. Has been used really successfully with a range of students. I also have a number of other learning journeys such as this for NF which will be coming soon!
PLEASE NOTE - I NO LONGER HAVE A COPY OF THE EXAMPLE ANSWER THAT I USED TO USE AS PART OF THIS LESSON (AS MENTIONED IN THE COMMENTS HENCE I HAVE TAKEN THAT SLIDE OUT AND REDUCED THE PRICE - YOU COULD EASILY WRITE ONE UP OF YOUR OWN AND INCLUDE THIS TASK TOO)
Full Paper 1 and Paper 2 AQA - Brand New A Level English Language
I hope you find these useful and they are easy to mark with any existing AQA mark scheme for Paper 1 however if you would like me to write you a bespoke mark scheme (perhaps if teaching for first time) or even some model answers at specific grades please feel free to email me at lsirr1986@gmail.com
I am also happy to make resources and model answers on request on any A Level Language, Literature or Lit/Lang combined module as I teach all three and examine also. I would like to be able to support other teachers to deliver high quality materials at this challenging time.
Who was Seneca and how does he link to tragic literature? A Level Spec B
A short presentation with links to useful sites and videos with a full mark exemplar to an AQA Paper 1, Part A question which shows how to discuss Seneca. Good for high ability students or as flipped learning. Any queries, please don’t hesitate to ask, or if there is something you would like making bespoke for you, please let me know.
New Mock Paper 2 and full answers GCSE AQA English
I have created a new Paper 2, viewpoints and perspectives and also written real time answers to each section. This might be useful for a morning pre-exam session or a mock paper pre-public examination.
I hope it is useful. Do look at my other resources for full walkthrough slides for each section and other sources.
Representation of Women in Disney Films Throughout Time KS3 English/Media
A lovely lesson to teach which is student-led and introduces the key concept of representation. It is also useful to develop critical writing skills. I really enjoyed using this with both Y7 and Y8 (I actually adapted it from some lessons I created for my BTEC Level 3 Media group so you could very easily do the same). Ties in well with any literature work on gender/protagonists/International Women's Day/Teaching Comparison.
Widely differentiated with opportunities for group learning. I made it to use in an Ofsted observation and it worked really well (although no-one came in!). The eventual outcome was to choose two characters and write an evaluative comparison of them. For most of the students this was their first ever attempt at extended critical writing so by using a 'safe' familiar topic they were able to learn the skills of Lang AO1/2/3 and 4 without even noticing!
I would like to add in a further/intro slide about Leia now she is being championed as an official Disney Princess - although it works on textual analysis of song lyrics so maybe you could use this as your stimulus - e.g. what is a stereotypical Disney Princess? or similar. You could also consider looking at remakes such as Maleficent/Beauty and the Beast and how these fit into the debate.
Also, the boys in this lesson really liked it - which surprised me! I showed each of the songs on Youtube before letting them work in ability groups on the investigation sheets. (Uses old NC levels - easily adaptable to what your school is using.)

Full Walkthrough Guide and Mock Resources Paper 1 Edexcel GCSE English Language New
Full Walkthrough Guide and Mock Resources Paper 1 Edexcel GCSE English Language New
Based on "Wuthering Heights" this is a fully-resourced revision pack with insert, question booklet and accompanying powerpoint to help you go through their exam - either after they have sat it or as a live "walking-talking" mock.
I use a visualiser to model answers for students but you can tailor/differentiate however you want to meet the needs of your group. This also comes with a Learning Journey map which you can adapt to any Paper One exam you use. I print mine off in A3 for the students to use as a tablemat.
N.B. I have used Sassoon Infant font for my resources and PPT which may not translate to your device. You can download it for free online.
Disclaimer - I do not own the rights to the images or original text used. I designed all the resources and teaching ideas to accompany the exam-style paper.
"Wuthering Heights" is copyright free due to age.
KS5 Introduction to Literature for Taster/One-off Lessons - (characters, tragedy and tragic heroes)
I made this to use with a KS4 group during a taster lesson. There was naturally a lot of explanation and discussion but there are a few easy little tasks they can also do. Hope it's useful for someone.
I printed the slides with pictures on them off as big handouts for note-making purposes.
Complete New Spec GCSE English Language (Paper 1 and 2) Mock Exam, Walkthrough, Example Answers
HUGE powerpoint guiding students through every aspect of the new exam with example questions and answers. Perfect for your final revision classes. This is aimed at Edexcel but extremely easy to adapt for AQA or others.
The texts are linked by a theme: survival at sea. I have used with mixed ability groups and it was really successful. I recommend printing the learning journeys for the exams off as well as certain scaffolded slides as worksheets. I also wrote out a timed answer to the 15 mark question on the visualiser which I have scanned in. If you find this useful I'm happy to make more for Paper 2 for no extra charge.
Paper 1: The Swiss Family Robinson
Paper 2: Survivor's account of the Titanic disaster and RNLI article
NB. These extracts have been abridged to suit the exam. I do not own any copyright.
Outstanding KS3 Non-Fiction Reading Lesson WW1 on Christmas Truce
Builds challenging and highly-differentiated GCSE skills into learning about the event. I have used with HA Y7, Mixed Y9 both with excellent results.
Brilliant for Paper 2 Edexcel or AQA adaption. I did this during a formal observation and it worked really well (Outstanding).
Use the Word worksheet to introduce or as a first lesson, then follow with the pair/team sheets (print on A3).
Uses competitive learning strategies to engage boys. Would make a good stand-alone lesson with war poetry or a war-based novel such as War Horse.
Development: Introduce/compare with the Sainsbury's ad (youtube), The Farm 'All Together Now' (song and lyrics) or Paul McCartney "Pipes of Peace" video/song.
Full walkthrough with example answers for Non-fiction comparison AQA/Edexcel
I made this as a lecture but it also has step by step activities for any comparison of non-fiction.
Practice Edexcel/AQA Paper 1 Reading Section B and Full Exam Walkthrough DH Lawrence
Fiction reading resources and example answer on Paper 1: Reading.
Based around DH Lawrence's The Rainbow.
This is for our Year 9's to be introduced to the section (Edexcel) but very easily adapted for AQA as it is not strictly 19th Century.
Any questions please ask.
