Titration - Making Salts

(0)
Document includes full method for titration and making crystals, plus results table for titration readings. Page two is an equipment list per pair. I put this together when I was looking for a different titration to do with my Y11 Chemistry class. This uses methyl orange as the indicator. They need to be accurate with the end point otherwise they will make coloured crystals. We extended this by looking at the crystals we made under the microscope and making observations. The class found it more engaging than the usual titration work. Easily links in to discussion on the choice of indicator and can be extended to include % yield.
Comparing Acids Practical

Comparing Acids Practical

(0)
A short practical activity for students to compare a carboxylic acid with hydrochloric acid. There is a starter included, full method and results table. My class particularly enjoyed the colour changes and extended this themselves in attempt to make a variety of colours.

Electrolysis - Molten and Solution

(0)
I used this for my lower ability Y11 class (approx grades B/C). Introduces electrolysis of molten compounds then extends to solutions. Includes a practical activity and results table. Print either slide 14 or 15 for the class depending on ability. AfL plenary.
Alkenes

Alkenes

(0)
Designed for AQA trilogy specification. Covers alkenes structure, formula and naming. Levelled tasks for level 4, 6 and 8. Page references are for the new Collins text book.
Alkanes and Cracking

Alkanes and Cracking

(0)
Designed for the new AQA trilogy specification. Covers alkanes, structure, naming and general formula as well as briefly discussing the need for cracking. Exam questions used throughout and for differentiation of tasks. I used a revision guide for the information that I asked them to read but could easily be text book pages or printed information.
Catalysts

Catalysts

(0)
Designed for AQA trilogy specification (1-9). Discusses the importance of catalysts, why they may be used despite cost and evaluating the shape of catalysts. For demoI use: Sulphuric acid + zinc, suphuric acid + zinc + copper turnings and sulphuric acid + zinc + copper sulphate for comparisons.
Covalent Bonding

Covalent Bonding

(0)
Designed for AQA (1-9) specification. Covers the basics of covalent bonding, worked examples need to be completed on the whiteboard. Quick test leading to differentiated task.
Ionic Bonding

Ionic Bonding

(0)
Designed for AQA (1-9) specification. Recap atomic and electronic structure. Activity to assess understanding which then leads into a differentiated task.
Group 0 and 1 Elements

Group 0 and 1 Elements

(0)
Designed for AQA (1-9) specification. I did the group 1metals an water demo, instructions not included but readily available.
Fractional Distillation Revision

Fractional Distillation Revision

(0)
Revision of the key concepts with a focus on key words. I used the GCSE pod video to help the students answer the questions on slide 2, but any suitable video could be used.
Alkanes and Alkenes Revision

Alkanes and Alkenes Revision

(0)
Revision of basic concepts with a focus on key words for starter and plenary. Using molymod kids to build and help visualise the molecules.
Science Harry Potter Potions Carousel Lesson

Science Harry Potter Potions Carousel Lesson

(1)
The first slide should be printed and given to the class (one each). This gives them the instructions using all the HP names for the the potion 'ingredients'. The second slide gives the equipment needed for each station and the real world names of the 'ingredients'. I used this with low ability Y8 but could easily be used for any lower school class (or possibly primary?) as a fun intro to Science or end of term activity. I designed these to fit into an hour lesson, with 4 groups moving around 4 stations. Add/remove or modify activities depending on class age/size/ability. Please risk assess for you individual class and school.
Covalent Bonding Low Ability / SEN

Covalent Bonding Low Ability / SEN

(0)
Introduction to covalent bonding or revision lesson. This covers the very basics of covalent bonding, using molymods to allow the students to visualise the bonds and then getting them to draw the bonding. Designed for bottom set Y10 who loved it.
The Development of the Periodic Table
lottie106lottie106

The Development of the Periodic Table

(1)
For the starter activity provide the class with some information about the elements. This can be tailored to your class, giving more or less information depending on ability (easily found on the web). Scavenger hunt activity about the scientists and their contribution to the development of the periodic table with a table to fill in. I have sanitised the information and cut down the amount of information that they need to read so that this can be completed in 10 minutes. AfL leading to a differentiated exam question. I had 3 sheets scaffolded to different levels. The scaffolding I provided is given on page 2 of the word document.
A Level (Y11) Chemistry Taster Session

A Level (Y11) Chemistry Taster Session

(0)
This is the session that I have put together for my Y11 taster session. It focusses on transition metals and why their complexes have different colours. The practicals that I have used a freely available from RSC, however I have compiled them into a single worksheet that includes the method and space to record observations. The blue bottle starter is again freely available but I have included here for those who need it. The section on calculating oxidation state could be cut out for a shorter session, then focussing on the practical work.
Chemistry Paper 2 Revision (AQA 9-1 New Specification)
lottie106lottie106

Chemistry Paper 2 Revision (AQA 9-1 New Specification)

(0)
A revision power point designed to be used for the final lesson before the paper 2 exam. Briefly covers the main points of collision theory and rates of reaction, fractional distillation, alkanes, alkenes, chromatography, gas tests, the Earth’s atmosphere, pollutants, drinking water and life cycle assessments. I have put this together with foundation students in mind but could easily be added to to cover the higher tier parts of the specification. I intent to print the slides out so that the students can annotate around them as I talk.

The Reactivity Series - AQA 9-1 GCSE

(0)
Introduction to the reactivity series. Encourages students to think about the practical observations that they would make. Differentiated task included - based on an exam question.
