Looks at the question, command word and what it means, identifying the topic and key words etc. Walks through the knowledge needed to answer the question, look at mark scheme and then attempt question again. FInish with extension to a different question.

Introduction to using the periodic table, atoms, elements, reactions and compounds. Worksheet to test use of the periodic table and a diagram of an atom to label. The demos could be anything to show different ways that we know a chemical reaction is happening and show elements and compounds reacting. I did demos of burning magnesium, acid + bicarb, lead nitrate + potassium iodide.

I used this as a revision lesson at the end of the unit, but would work equally well as a follow up lesson after teaching atomic structure. Students are then guided through the steps that they need to be able to answer question on chromatography including: what it is how it works the method calculating Rf values There is practice for the students at each step. A method with space for explanation of importance is included.
