AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 2B: In this lesson we look at the environmental impacts of quarrying in the UK. The lesson starts with a quick true or false retrieval practice quiz with sound effects. We then look at a photo of a quarry and the pupils think about all the impacts the quarry may be having on the physical environment. There are possible answers on the next slide. We then look at ways that industry might be able to become more sustainable. The pupils have hexes and are asked to develop the points further by explaining their potential impacts. There are suggestions on the following slide. We then look at quarrying and Torr Quarry as an example. The pupils have an info sheet and a knowledge organiser to complete with questions relating to Torr Quarry and Quarrying. There is also a video clip on quarry restoration to help with this section. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 2B: In this lesson we look at how trade and in particular Fairtrade can help reduce the development gap. The lesson has a retrieval practice starter based around Ordnance Survey symbols. We firstly introduce what tariffs and quotas are and the pupils fill in a table where they decide if the statement applies to a tariff or a quota. The pupils complete a cloze exercise on what free trade is and we then look at the benefits of being in a trading group or trade bloc. We introduce Fairtrade and there is a video clip, we then look at Uganda and coffee farmers in the country who participate in a Fairtrade scheme and community project. The pupils complete a guided reading exercise and there is also a video for this. We finish with a GCSE-style practice question with some guidance and structure provided for the students. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1A: In this lesson we look at the events, effects and responses of Cyclone Idai on Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. The lesson has a retrieval practice starter based around a field sketch of a coastline. We firstly introduce Cylone Idai and there is a video clip of the impafts to give students an understanding of the context. The students then undertake a colouring by numbers exercise to create a choropleth map of the rainfall accumulations of the tropical storm. We then consider the effects. The students complete a simple classification exercise categorising the effects into primary and secondary as well a SEE effects. We then look at the responses to the cyclone. There is a worksheet for this activity where the students read the repsonses and tick the appropriate boxes to determine if it was immediate or long-term and how long they think the response took. We finish with a GCSE-style practice question with some guidance and structure provided for the students. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the 2016 specification Unit 1C: In this lesson we look at the physical and human factors affecting flood risk and storm hydrographs and what factors affect their shape. We start with a retrieval practice quiz with ten questions. We begin by looking at the definition of flooding and a brief example by considering the floods around Doncaster in 2019 and 2020. There is a video clip for this. We then look at the physical and human factors that affect flooding. The students have a diagram to annotate and locate an appropriate example on the diagram, they then colour code the annotations into physical and human factors. We then explore the components of a hydrograph. The students have a blank graph to label on the various component parts of the graph. We then look at what factors are likely to affect the storm hydrograph. Here the students have a grid to fill in with annotations from the board. They have to locate where the annotation would logically go on their grid. We finish with a 4-mark GCSE style question and there is some tips for students who need it on how to answer it. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1C: In this lesson we look at depositional features found in the lower course of a river. The starter is a a countdown retrieval practice quiz with dramatic countdown music! We start by looking at natural levees and how they are formed. The pupils create a sequence of diagrams to show their formation based on information on the board. They are provided with outline drawings to start with to save time. We then look at the formation of floodplains. The pupils create a diagram based on the instructions on the board without actually seeing the diagram, but there is an example if they are struggling and they are given an outline floodplain to start with. We then look at the formation of estuaries. The pupils annotate a photograph to show the different features of the estuary formed by deposition. We finish on a 4 mark question on the formation of floodplains that was in an exam in 2017. I usually model the answer after the pupils have had a go. We then look at a cartoon which is showing rural-urban migration together with other geographical concepts. We then look at the reasons for people moving into rural areas. We then introduce two examples, one of rural population growth (South Cambridgeshire) and the other of rural population decline (Outer Hebrides). The pupils have a task worksheet to complete with various tasks for them to tackle. We finish with a 6-mark practice question with some guidance on how to respond. We then introduce the idea of the economy with the pupils completing a Frayer model, we then look at where the UK is in international standings currently and where it might be in the future. We then look at the structure of the economy, we remind ourselves of the different sectors with a sorting task and then look at how the UK’s economy has changed over time. The pupils complete a worksheet and complete a pie chart. We then look at the main drivers in this change and the pupils use information sheets/slides to complete a worksheet. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1C: In this lesson we look at long and cross profiles of a river and how river valleys change shape downstream. We start with “perfect paragraph”. The pupils read a paragraph describing a drainage basin and they should try to find the errors in the paragraph and what should be added in. We then introduce long profiles, and the pupils will be plotting a long profile of a river on their worksheet. We then look at the upper, middle and lower courses of the river. The pupils shade in these sections on their graph. We complete the worksheet by looking at cross profiles and how river valley shapes change downstream. The pupils create annotated cross sections of the upper, middle and lower courses using the info slides. We finish with a 4 mark GCSE-style question “describe how the shape of a river valley changes downstream”. As always the pupils have some guidance on the question if they need it. We start with a photo of the G7 and the pupils will think about what the organisation is and who is in it. We then consider why countries have built up a large amount of debt. We then look at the pattern of HIPC’s around the globe and the pupils complete a differentiated activity around a map which shows their locations. We then look at how debt relief can reduce the development gap and then onto micro finance with a brief look at the Grameen Bank. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1C: In this lesson we look at erosion, transportation and deposition. The starter is “which row is the odd one out”. The pupils need to work out which row has an incorrect term in. Just gets them thinking. We then look at erosion and when rivers are eroding more effectively. The pupils learn about vertical and lateral erosion and will be making some diagrams in there exercise books. They then receive a worksheet where the processes of erosion and transportation are illustrated, the pupils use an information slide (or sheet if you prefer) and label the processes on and colour code the area of the diagram where that process is displayed. We then look at how these processes vary as you progress down the long profile of a river. The pupils get another worksheet where they read the labels and draw an appropriate diagram in each box to create an illustrated log profile. We finish with a summarising pyramid plenary. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the 2016 specification Unit 1B: In this lesson we look at how ecosystems operate, from small-scale ecosystems to biomes. We start with a retrieval practice task based around coats. We begin by looking at what the biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem are. The students are given an example ecosystem and have to categorise the components according to whether they think they are biotic or abiotic. We then look at different scales of ecosystems and look at trophic levels. The students work out which examples belong with which trophic level . We then explore an example of a food chain, using a small-scale ecosystem (a pond) the students have to work out which creatures belong in which trophic level. We then look at biomass in the food chain and discuss why biomass declines at each level. We finish with a 4-mark GCSE style question and there is some tips for students who need it on how to answer it. We then look at the location of tropical rainforests and the students have a map with some questions of differing difficulty to answer. The students are provided with a worksheet to draw a climate graph of the rainforest with some additional skills questions to answer (works well with a visualiser). The students complete an annotated profile of the rainforest latosol soil, describing and explaining its characteristics. We start with a true or false retrieval practice quiz on wave types from the previous lesson. We then introduce the concept of weathering and proceed to look at mechanical, biological and chemical weathering. The pupils have a variety of annotation, drawing and question tasks to complete on the worksheet. Moving on to mass movement, the pupils get a second worksheet with 4 different slopes on. The pupils then are given information on each type of mass movement. They sketch the type of mass movement onto their slope and add labels. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 2A: In this lesson we look at economic opportunities in London, focusing on the regeneration of the London Docklands. We start with a photo interpretation of the London Docklands in the late 1970s. The pupils start to think about why the area has declined and how it might affect the residents. We then introduce the concept of urban regeneration and start by looking at the history of the Docklands and the pupils complete spray diagram of reasons why the area feel into disuse. We then look at the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) and the pupils create an annotated diagram ‘the road to regeneration’ using information from the board. Once we have completed the diagram we tackle a 6-mark question on economic improvements in a HIC city. The pupils do have some help with some points to get them going if they need it. AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1C: In this lesson we look at what managed retreat is and we also consider an example at Medmerry in West Sussex. The starter is a a simple true or false quiz that is used for retrieval practice, but is easily edited. We introduce the concept of coastal management schemes first and then we explore the definition of managed retreat with a simple fill in the gap task and the pupils consider when it might be appropriate as a strategy and when not. We introduce Medmerry, the pupils write a description of it’s location before we look at the scheme and why it was needed. The pupils have a worksheet, the questions are answered whilst the pupils watch a video clip on the scheme. They then complete a visual plan map of the scheme to show how the area is flooded. We then consider the benefits and costs of the scheme in a categorising task. We finish with a 6 mark question on the effectiveness of coastal management schemes.
