This literacy mat can be used to support students throughout their GCSE. It demonstrates the big picture of the American West and includes key people and events. It contains lots of key information and advice which will help develop independence. This could even be blown up for display. I know that many department budgets are restrained so I have included a black and white version too.

In this lesson students research different methods of commemorating the slave trade and abolition before designing their own. A marketplace type activity develops student understanding and planning sheets are provided to support. Great for a last lesson within a scheme of work on the Slave Trade or for Black History Month. This lesson explores the leadership qualities demonstrated by Oliver Cromwell. Students start by exploring a source in depth in pairs and then independently before moving on to consider a range of interpretations. All resources are provided her for an hour's work. This lesson was planned for Y12 Students but could be differentiated further to support younger students. This resource was planned for Edexcel's medicine through time course however it could easily be adapted to suit other boards or lower year groups. Students go through a range of activities to gather and secure their knowledge of Nightingale. Independence is encouraged and students have to work hard to complete all activities within the hour. I use both the Edexcel endorsed brown textbook and the older Edexcel blue and white Dawson textbook in my medicine classes. You will require textbooks for this lesson! Textbooks used were the white and blue Dawson textbook and the brown Edexcel endorsed textbook (new 2013 edition). This lesson encourages students to explore change and continuity across three time periods: Roman, Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Students use the focus of hospitals to recap ideas about treatment, doctors, medicines and change and continuity. The homework is designed to practice for Q1 of the Edexcel Medicine Through Time paper. All resources provided for an hour's lesson, great for independent learning and discussion. There are some aspects to the new Edexcel A-level course covering Stuart Britain which are a little dull. These two lessons are designed the make the content a little more engaging! In lesson one, students work as candidates for the apprentice to pitch an idea for a cloth trade business. It's brilliant for independent learning! Lego figures help to make the Feudal System a little less complex. Through reinforcing the idea of a hirearchy students begin to understand what the feudal system was and how it helped William control England. The script activity involves selected students ripping up A3 paper and dividing it amongst the class. If you have questions please ask! These lessons were designed as an introduction to the Surgery unit for Edexcel but could easily be adapted for other exam boards. Students explore how surgery has changed using source images and consider how Blood, Infection and Pain could affect surgery. The lessons have relevant resources for both teacher and students and should explain themselves. In this lesson students explore some of the big issues that affect our world today. Students are encouraging to think about what wealthy countries can do to support and tackle these issues such as: child soldiers, modern slavery and torture. After exploring some of the issues students are encouraged to design a campaign in order to raise awareness. I have attached some example work in a photograph here. This resource was planned for a 1 hour and 30 minute session during an Activity Week during the Summer Term. The theme was based around "Finding God in all things" but the resource could easily be adapted for a secular purpose. During the session, students research a historical figure or event and research who, what, why, when, how. The students are then tasked with creating a video about their research on ipads (if available in your school) or on their smart phones. There's plenty to do here and a lesson plan for the teacher. This Tarsia puzzle covers the theme of the Origings of the Cold War. Great for 9-1 GCSE revision and intervention sessions. Made for Edexcel Paper 2 Topic 1 but I'm sure it fits other exam board specs. A Tarsia puzzle requires students to match up sides of triangles to form a hexagonal shape. They are brilliant for revision and get students to think hard. I use these at the starts of ends of lessons and they can take 10-20 minutes depending on your class's confidence in the material. All materials are provided here including student instructions, student puzzle pieces and teacher answers. All images have been acquired through a search engine filtered to labelled for re-use.
