This is booklet 5 called EAL worksheets and Games for Initial Learners Food and Drinks Vocabulary. There are 4 other booklets available in the pack containing vocabulary building worksheets and games for Initial Learners of English. All 5 booklets are printable. Worksheets and games are suitable for use from age 8 to adult. Some games could be used with younger children. Worksheets and games are suitable for use from age 8 to adult. The booklets could be suitable for use with a group of refugees who have a wide age range and who are beginning to learn English. The word matching activities could be particularly useful for students who have had little education in their first language and perhaps might not be literate in their first language. Consolidation of new vocabulary is possible by using a range of different worksheets and games. By using this pack, Initial Learners should be able to achieve success and build confidence in the early days of acquiring English. If new arrivals use the reference sheets they will be able to complete worksheets correctly. This will help to reduce stress and allow them to build confidence in using a new language. The skills developed by using the worksheets are reading and writing.Games provide opportunities for the development of speaking, listening and interaction with peers. A front cover has been included if the making of a booklet is required. The words for some special days are included. They are New Year’s Day, Christmas, Chinese New Year, Eid and St Valentine’s Day. It is suggested that the internet can be used to find unknown information. At the end there is a chart for recording class birthdays, followed by a worksheet for recording the survey results. This has been produced for students who are new to English but it is also suitable for use with native English Speakers.

Number dominoes is suitable for use with students who have a range of levels of English acquisition. It is also useful for native English speakers who are working at different levels. There are six sets of dominoes in this resource. Dominoes Game 1 - Matching number words and numbers in order 1 -50 Dominoes Game 2 – Matching number words and numbers in order 51 – 100 Dominoes Game 3 - Matching number words and numbers out of order 1 – 50 Dominoes Game 4 – Matching number words and numbers out of order 51 - 100 Dominoes Game 5 – Matching number words and numbers in order 1 - 20 Dominoes Game 6 – Matching number words and numbers out of order 1 – 20 The individual dominoes for each game are easily identified by the different coloured borders. The games can be used for learning to read the names of the numbers up to 20 or 100. For younger students the dominoes in order games are also useful for learning number order. It is suggested that students name the number and read the number word on the domino as it is placed on the table. This will help students to retain the vocabulary.

This resource is useful for children who have learned the correct letter formation and who are now able to write over dotted letters and copy simple sentences. The content, (as the title suggests) is about the child. Worksheets include opportunities for reading, writing, speaking, drawing and discussion. Topics include their physical appearance, some body parts, who lives at home, likes and dislikes, the alphabet, numbers to ten and friends. If this resource is to be used as a booklet, two choices of front cover are available. For children who are at the initial stage of learning English, the visuals help with developing English vocabulary. If the booklet pages are used as homework tasks, this will allow parents to see their child’s progress and provide input if required.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears story has follow up activities related to the story. All pages are printable. This resource could be particularly useful if doing the Fairyland topic as part of the Curriculum for Excellence and using the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. A substantial amount of visual support has been used to aid reading and comprehension which is beneficial to all students. Visual support is extremely important for students who are new to English. A little book containing the story of Goldilocks and the three bears has been provided with 39 illustrated pages designed to aid comprehension. Too much salt and too much sugar in the porridge provides opportunities for discussion about healthy eating. Simple sentences have been used to tell the story which is written in present tense. Direct speech is used by the characters in the story. The examples of direct speech could be used as models while acting out the story or for speaking while using the cut-out puppets to retell the story. This resource contains an extensive range of worksheets, activities and surveys suitable for a wide range of abilities. Templates for letter writing and retelling the story / creating a different version of the story are available for use. Black and white clipart of the characters and items used in the story are also available for colouring and sticking on to the story writing templates. Some mathematical worksheets have also been included.

Using this resource will help students with reading, spelling, pronunciation and possibly increase English vocabulary. Often resources for doing phonic work have words without pictures. This is not ideal for students who are learning English. All the words used in this resource have visual support, so that learning the sounds of a combination of two letters is incorporated with learning additional English vocabulary. As with most of my resources, reference pages are included so that students can successfully complete worksheets, play games and take part in activities. This enables students to work independently at times and builds confidence in using the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
