Music History Unit: The Periods of Music
This 22 page workbook is a complete unit for students to begin working their way through the time periods of music history. There are biographies, listening, composition, and performance activities throughout the workbook along with rubrics for the performance tasks. Included in this file are a workbook with quarter/eighth note language and one with crotchet/quaver language as well as an answer key for your convenience. My Grade 6 pupils really enjoy this unit and find the work both challenging and satisfying.
Escape the Music Room
This is a fun, escape room themed activity for a music class that also reinforces musical concepts. There are 7 different puzzles to solve using music knowledge such as rhythmic values, tempo markings, and note names. It is possible to set this up in a single classroom and have stations for the clues. If you have the space, it also works to use breakout spaces for separate clues. My middle schoolers loved it and generally solved it in 30-40 minutes. My Grade 5 pupils worked through the escape room with some hints, but were able to complete it with help.
Fair warning, this entire escape room is based on a musical pun so if you are into punny jokes, this one is for you!
Included:
All clues in PNG format
Answers to all of the clues
A walkthrough/set-up suggestions
One clue needs to be on a piano. A picture of a piano can work in a pinch
Composer Biographies and Wordsearches
Spark your student’s inner music historian with easy to read, one page biographies on 23 composers from different music time periods then use the biography to search for hidden words in the attached word-search relating to the composer. A great activity for introductory music history lessons or lessons for non-music specialists. All biographies are formatted for one page and are saved as individual PDFs for ease of printing. An answer key per composer is included.
Composers included:

Mussorgsky
Mahler

Music and Art Integration Unit
Included in this unit is a printable student booklets for music (15 pages) and art (12 pages). Each features historical information, comprehension questions, rubrics for reference and grading, student reflection pages, and colorful photos. Lesson plans spanning 11 weeks are also included. In both art and music, students are asked to complete three projects; an introductory project, a cross-curricular project, and a skills-based project. Both units could easily be expanded time-wise should students require more time in which to work.
The focus in music is the work of Mussorgsky and how his music was influenced by the artwork of Victor Hartmann. After listening to some of Mussorgsky’s works, students will learn to play a melody by Mussorgsky and then work towards composing two pieces of music; one based upon a famous piece of art and one based upon art they create in art.
The focus in art is on the Impressionist movement. Students are asked to paint an Impressionist interpretation of one of Hartmann’s pieces of art. They are then asked to create their own piece of Impressionism which will be used at the end of the music unit. Finally, students create an Impressionist artwork based upon a song composed by Mussorgsky.
This is a great unit for those teacher interested in developing interdisciplinary practice or cross-curricular links in an integrated arts setting. Theoretically, the art and music units could stand alone with minor adjustments, but I would not recommend it as they have been designed to work in tandem.
