Music Unit: The Blues
A great guide for introducing students to the Blues!! This unit booklet serves as a guide through Blues chords and improvisation. Students will have the most success if they have access to keyboards or pianos, especially for the 12 bar Blues chord section. The improvisation can be done on any instrument, but piano seems to easily accessible by most students. This booklet is 14 pages long and includes a variety of activities and grading rubrics. It typically takes about 16 weeks to work through this unit with all of the activities and giving students enough practice time to solidify skills.

Music Composer Research Project
Finally, here is a fun way for students to learn about composers!!! In this five-part unit, students engage in self-directed research about a composer of their choice to become class experts. They present the information they find in a creative manner and culminate with the creation of a parody of a folk tune based on their composer. This 8 page packet can be printed to hand out to pupils or projected, as you choose. My students loved working on this project and it took my Grade 5 pupils approximately 10 weeks to go from research to performing silly composer songs.
Included Activities:
Research on composers (using the Internet or other sources)
Creative presentation ideas
Presenting to the class
Composing a Silly Composer Song
Performing the Silly Composer Song

This unit is designed to introduce students to the differences between rhythm and pulse and how to notate rhythms in various time signatures. As the unit progresses, the tasks are increasingly difficult. But just think, all your planning is basically done for the next 10 weeks! Take a break and have a cup of tea because you deserve it!
