This scaffold is used regularly to support pupils when writing about Non Fiction texts in both Unit 1 and Unit 4.
This is aimed at pupils who struggle to order their ideas and to support better timing in exams, and to develop the skill of embedding evidence.
It can also be edited for modelling in class and a springboard for Year 9 and 10 RNF.
How is it used in the classroom? When modelling answers and responses, I would use this with a visualiser. I would also print and cut them out and use them as structure strips by sticking them into the books of pupils who need help with organising their responses - feedback and improvement. Or I would laminate and hole punch them for their folders - good for SEN and TAs - that way they can use it each time I set them a question and I would ask them to check their answers or refer back to it.
Oracy - can be used as oracy support as well - ask the class to speak like an expert and use the structure strip to structure their talk.
I have used this with a range of abilities.
It has added a sense of focus and provided a springboard and a safety net for some, in terms of how they approach the question.
It provides simple scaffolds and can be used as part of a lesson to structure writing or to develop discussion, and encourage pupils to use the language of comparison.
There is also supportive vocabulary and effective questions that can be used to draw out key ideas and develop understanding for further analysis.
Marking grid and checklist that can be edited for teacher and pupil use.
Also covers AOs in both Unit 1 and Unit 4.
Target setting or identification of targets through checklist and reading over completed work using the sheet to mark.
Can be used as Mock Exam feedback sheet or DIRT time

This is a structure strip - pupils cut it out and stick it in the margin and use it as a guide for writing their essay. There are questions and writing prompts, as well as suggested approaches. This has proven very useful for pupils of all abilities and can be used as a template for other forms of writing.
Unit 4: Personal and Creative Writing - Page 1 is for Content and Page 2 is for SPG feedback and corrections. You can print the pages back to back.
This pupil friendly mark scheme allows for feedback and discussion in relation to the competence levels. It is also a neat summary and can be used as a cover sheet for marking and feedback or peer assessment. It allows pupils to see how their mark is totaled and what they need to improve upon for the next assessment.

A3 marking mats for GCSE English Literature and Language Controlled Assessment. These are useful for marking and standardisation as they are easy to use with all information and CCEA guidance on one sheet with some tips.
Written Controlled Assessment task based on the Bernard Maclaverty’s short story ‘The Exercise’. I have also included the Controlled Assessment question as a starter or baseline that can be edited for your own use.
This has successfully been used in a range of settings and there are many aspects of the writer’s craft to explore. In terms of characterisation, there are lots of opportunities to fulfill the CCEA rubric and writer’s methods such as figurative language, dialogue, themes and structure. I would recommend this task for a range of abilities as it is relatable in terms of setting and there are many avenues to explore from a speaking and listening perspective - particularly around the themes of childhood, children’s rights and schooling in general.
The themes are: Childhood and/or Youth
I have edited the beginning by removing the initial opening section.
This is perfect for a focused study for small groups or a range of abilities.

Structure strips for Reading Non Fiction and Media Texts.
Can also be used for KS3.
Writing - Used alongside PPQs, this has proven to be a highly effective strategy to support writing at GCSE level and encourage pupils to develop their points.
I have also included a GCSE/KS3 frame for Do Now tasks. You can start a lesson with a PPQ topic, short brainstorm of ideas then use this scaffold to lead into a short and punchy speech. Repeated practice can then be used to expand writing and build stamina.
SPG - Basic SPG rules for checking work at the end and reduces time going around the class and making secretarial edits - pupils can do so independently as a separate task. Chief Examiner report refers to the ‘Usual Suspects’ for spelling, which are also included at the bottom.
For rehearsal and oracy - you can use these as recap and recall. You can ask the class to recite elements or to move with you through the process of writing analytical paragraphs. It is not one size fits all, but I have had great success with all ranges of abilities using this scaffold. Hope you find it useful!
