Year 1 Common Exception Words Flashcards with sentences.
Common exception words are words in which the English Spelling code works in an unusual or uncommon way. They are not words for which phonics ‘doesn’t work’, but they may be exceptions to spelling rules, or words which use a particular combination of letters to represent sound patterns in a rare or unique way.
The statutory requirements of the Year 1 Spelling Curriculum include the common exception words:
the, a, do, to, today, of, said, says, are, were, was, is, his, has, I, you, your, they, be, he, me, she, we, no, go, so, by, my, here, there, where, love, come, some, one, once, ask, friend, school, put, push, pull, full, house, and our.
69 word cards with suffixes - to be laminated and cut up so children can match the cards.
2 worksheets to record answers - children fill these in once they have matched a word with it’s suffix.
4 board games - Children roll the dice and find the first suffix card and a word to go with it. Once complete they can put a counter on the suffix so when that number is rolled again, children find the second suffix, and so on. It can also be used where children have to find the whole row of suffixes and then put the cards back in the pile for others to use on their turn.
1 answer sheet - for teachers and children to check/mark answers. Can also be used as a support tool for children to find the correct suffixes.
These activities are made to be very flexible and differentiated so any ability can access the content.
