I am an English teacher with 10 years experience. I believe my resources are robust, creative, engaging and challenging. I aim to share resources which are ready to print and PowerPoint lessons which are ready to teach. All of my resources are of a high quality and in line with the current Scottish curriculum, or else can be easily adjusted to suit other curricula. I hope you enjoy any resource you purchase and they make your life a little less stressful! :)

This is a short but fun and well presented unit to use at Christmas time with an S1/2 class. It includes a brainstorming activity, a 5 senses task, an example stanza to demonstrate rhyme scheme, and 3 beautiful printable 1st, 2nd and 3rd place certificates (printable PowerPoint slide).
This is an example essay based on a “character changes” type essay question which can easily be adjusted to fit a theme" style question, i.e the theme of Growing Up. Essay has excellent analysis with explicit links to the question made throughout. Suitable for N5/6 / GCSE.
I have also included a detailed paragraph plan for a Theme style essay, focussed on the Theme of “Growing Up”.
2 assessments based on the non-fiction passage “Urban Fox” and the short story “The Lighthouse” by Agnes Owens. These can only be used once the teacher has taught Active Literacy strategies to the class. A basic Active Literacy PowerPoint, which takes you through the strategies, has also been provided and can be adapted to suit multiple texts. Both texts have been included.
This revision pack includes annotations of the poem, notes on Purpose, Themes, Structure and Techniques as well as 2x exam style questions at the end. Ready to print and distribute.
This is a BUNDLE of resources which includes: a copy of George Orwell’s “A Hanging”, a table for pupils to complete once they have read and learned the essay. The table is partially filled and challenges pupils to both find evidence and provide explanations and analysis (includes guidance) for the most significant aspects of the text. This has been an invaluable resource for me when teaching this text. The PowerPoint takes pupils through the Critical Essay writing process with guidance on planning a response, to structuring paragraphs ( introduction and main body paragraphs) and using time connectives to allow their essay to flow. It also includes an exemplar paragraph for guidance.
All you need to take a BGE class through Discursive Writing. This is both a teacher and pupil friendly unit of work that is “write on” and ready to print. The support PowerPoint introduces the topic of Discursive Writing and also takes pupils through how to structure their introductions and main body paragraphs. The main unit is a Word file; below is a copy of the Contents Page of the printable unit. I’d like to add that the preview is such a way that it makes the front page look incredibly dull when it’s actually very visual - strange.

As we approach the exam, I wanted to prepare the pupils for potential unseen essay questions they may encounter in the exam and to move away from the attitude that they can “learn” an essay and hope it comes up on the day. I made these resources to support pupils in writing in response to the following essay questions:
*Choose a poem which is effective because of its use of contrast and/ or imagery. With reference to appropriate techniques, discuss how the poet’s use of these features contributes to your appreciation of the central concerns of the poem.
*
and
*Choose a poem which deals with an issue of importance to human experience. With reference to appropriate techniques, explain how this issue is presented and discuss how it enhances your appreciation of the poem. *
Each resource contains some general guidance linked to unpacking the essay question, a partially populated table designed to encourage them to choose the appropriate and most suitable evidence from the poem for each question, and an example paragraph.
A paragraph plan with guidance and an example paragraph created to support pupils writing a “Theme” Critical Essay in response to “Blood Brothers” by Willy Russell. I created this for an S3, but can easily adapted and then used at National 5/6 level.
A printable PowerPoint resource which takes the pupils thorugh the various examples of Duality in Jekyll and Hyde, as means of supporting the Scottish Set Texts section of the Higher exam.
This is a detailed paragraph plan, including an example paragraph, for students to follow when writing about an “isolated character” in response to The Great Gatsby ( focus being Jay Gatsby himself). Please also see my resource: “Critical essay Guidance” which is an excellent precursor to essay writing after studying The Great Gatsby.
I have also included an example of an excellent essay based on an “isolated character” style question.
This is an excellent example of writing in response to George Orwell’s, “A Hanging,” designed to be written in response to a question similar to: “deal with an issue/ theme (Capital Punishment), has a strong message” etc. below is a breakdown of what the paragraphs focus on:
Setting
Characterisation (prisoner and guards)
Symbolism of the dog
Water imagery/ turning point
Ending
This unit, designed for BGE pupils, contains the following: a copy of the poem, a support PowerPoint; a table to record annotations; a list of tricky vocabulary from the poem; parody questions based on The Simpsons Halloween episode and placemats in PP format which are designed to be printed and used for station work.
This short unit of work is based upon the Charlie Brooker series, ‘Black Mirror,’ with a focus on the episode ‘Nosdive’. Pupils watch the episode, take notes and then engage in discussion ( which I evidenced for their N6 Spoken Language assessment). I have also made questions to accompany an article which was written in response to the episode, along with a very thorough marking scheme. Created in 2018 so up-to-date and incredibly engaging for the pupils.
This is a very useful and self explanatory resource which takes pupils through how to structure a Critical Essay including: Introductions ( with an example introduction), Topic Sentence Success Criteria, Main Body paragraph structure using an approach called “TIE” your evidence which I have created that encourages pupils to fully analyse and evaluate their quotations ( explained in PowerPoint). I have also included a detailed paragraph plan based on a “character changes” style question. This is suitable for both National 5 and 6 pupils.
This relatively short unit of work is designed to inspire pupils how to write their own urban legend. There are 2 PowerPoints which together takes the pupils through basic creative writing conventions: Characterisation, Setting and Plot structure, with a number of tasks to do along the way. I have also attached a compilation of some popular (but brief) urban legends for consideration - this correlates with a task within the PP, as well as a copy of the short story “Baby by the Roadside”. There is also a short RUAE passage with questions based on the topic of… you guessed it: Urban Legends. It’s a nice change from Halloween writing and the kids really buy into it! ( planning sheet included)
An example of an excellent essay based on a “flawed but admirable character” style essay. Can be adapted to suit a number of different essay questions. Please also see my “critical essay guidance” PP resource.
This revision booklet contains full annotations, tasks, notes and exam style questions for the poems trio, In the Snack bar and Good Friday. ready to print and distribute.
Between these 2 PowerPoints you will find materials to take pupils through a trailer task, camera shots and angles and colour and lighting. Each presentation also includes stills from the movie with questions and an embedded countdown timer. Suitable for use with S1/2 ( Year 8/9). There is also a blank grid for pupils to sketch each angle and space to match and stick the purpose as well as a quiz to test pupils’ knowledge of each shot and their purpose.
A 20 page PP taking the pupils through Colour and Lighting as used for effect in the animated version of “A Christmas Carol” ( Jim Carrey) With explanations, stills and pupil prompts.
