Advertising Unit: The Dragon's Apprentice

(0)
This colourful and engaging unit of work takes the pupils through various aspects of advertising such as: logos, the use of colour, slogans, persuasive language etc. Pupils also watch examples of Dragon’s Den pitches online ( teacher can choose these, although I used reggae Reggae sauce and I-Teddy) as a way of thinking about their own product and pitches. The overall objective of the unit is for the class to work in groups on pitching an “impossible product” to “The Dragons” demonstrating their understanding of advertising conventions learned in class. There is also a Numeracy element as, prior to their pitch, the group must plan and think of target market, number of projected sales, growth etc. This unit is lots of fun and is best suited to S2/3 ( year 9/10).

Superhero Origin Story: FULL Creative Writing Unit S1/2

(0)
This is a full unit of work based around the theme of superhero origin stories. There are a number of Reading, Writing, Talk and Listening tasks, as well as a scaffolded essay plan at the end to assist pupils writing their own origin story. The pupils love this unit of work and, like my other resources, it is ready to print. As the ‘listening and note-making’ sheets are in landscape these should be printed separately and merged into the unit just after the 'Questions for The Hulk" page, before photocopying class sets of the unit. I have also included 3 word documents which have coloured images of the settings used in the booklet These may be printed in colour to assist the “Super Setting” activity, or simply projected. Enjoy :)

Urban Legends Creative Writing Unit KS3/4

This relatively short unit of work is designed to inspire pupils how to write their own urban legend. There are 2 PowerPoints which together takes the pupils through basic creative writing conventions: Characterisation, Setting and Plot structure, with a number of tasks to do along the way. I have also attached a compilation of some popular (but brief) urban legends for consideration - this correlates with a task within the PP, as well as a copy of the short story “Baby by the Roadside”. There is also a short RUAE passage with questions based on the topic of… you guessed it: Urban Legends. It’s a nice change from Halloween writing and the kids really buy into it! ( planning sheet included)

A PowerPoint presentation which should be used to teach pupils how to structure the main body paragraphs of their Critical Essays and analyse and evaluate their quotations properly using an approach called “TIE” ( Technique, Importance and Evaluation) There are 5 example paragraphs which I have labelled, and which include full and detailed analysis. This short unit of work is based upon the Charlie Brooker series, ‘Black Mirror,’ with a focus on the episode ‘Nosdive’. Pupils watch the episode, take notes and then engage in discussion ( which I evidenced for their N6 Spoken Language assessment). I have also made questions to accompany an article which was written in response to the episode, along with a very thorough marking scheme. Created in 2018 so up-to-date and incredibly engaging for the pupils.
