My students really enjoy this one! Rich tasks encourage learners to think creatively, work logically, communicate their ideas, analyze results or strategies, and make connections. Incorporating rich tasks into your math class room can help build a community of inquiry, collaboration, and imagination! Task: Students are tasked with planning a trip for a celebrity’s trip and earn the most money for charities. Given a map and some information about the trip, they must take into account both distance and time, plan creatively, and communicate their thinking. This task is well-suited for group work on non-permanent surfaces. Grade level: 5-9 Topic: Proportions, Algebra, Optimization, Problem solving Included: Student instructions and worksheet Solution and answer key Assessment: student self assessment and teacher assessment of task using standards-based grading.
