Complete lesson; fully resourced on Oversight of the Executive Branch and how effectively Congress performs this function. Lesson 4 in my Congress topic and Lesson 3 of the functions of Congress run of lessons (previously covered Legislation and Representation). All resources included- no need for textbooks or anything else, all examples included up to and including President Biden within the slides/ documents.

Edexcel ALevel Politics Component 3 USA Comparative Introduction to Congress and its structure and powers Fully comprehensive lesson (2 hours) which includes all necessary resources Includes up to date case studies relevant to all powers of Congress. This lesson has been planned using the 2021 Bennett textbook so all information has come from this source. Includes a starter looking at popular perceptions of Congress and discussion task around reasons for this. Card sort matching examples and descriptions of Congressional powers- sorting Exclusive from Concurrent powers of Congress.

Edexcel Politics Alevel Lessons on Ideologies as a whole and Liberalism as a topic for the Edexcel 2017 spec. I teach Liberalism first because it makes MUCH more sense since it was developed first as an Ideology and Conservatism was a response to it. This bundle includes the first 7 lessons (2 hours each) intro and activities, Core Values with independent research (uses hand outs from Pearson and Haywood book) and Explanation of the Core Values but you could use some of the slides if you don’t have the textbook. Lesson 5 ends up developing a plan for the essay: To what extent do Liberals agree on the State? (24 marks) I taught these lessons to my Year 13 class and they worked really well for discussion. Also includes some embedded videos and worksheets. EDIT: I have now amended this resource and added some additional files. If you have already paid for it- you should be able to redownload the bundle.

Hate teaching Electoral Systems? I used to as well- no matter how I taught them- students could never remember the differences and strengths and weaknesses. Edexcel Politics ALevel can be used for any spec- (Note may now be slightly out of date as the Mayoral elections have changed system) and list no longer used This resource was created after 10 years of frustration! It is designed to let students explore the different systems for themselves- engaging with the ballot forms and trying to work out how they work and the strengths and weaknesses for themselves. When I used this for the first time last year the students remembered the systems so much better than ever before and were able to evaluate them really well. Accompanying powerpoint and worksheets to go with the interactive ballot activity and card sort. This resource covers 5-6 hours of teaching on electoral systems including a detailed evaluation of FPTP and a comparison to other electoral systems as a legacy of the Jenkins commission. It covers most of the Elections topic just nothing on Referendums. All videos except one are embedded for your convenience- the other was too large! Edexcel Government and Politics Lesson 3 Representative Democracy UK Complete lesson on Representative Democracy and its Features in the UK including some analysis and evaluation of how effective it is. This is my lesson 5 on Congress (Edexcel) and examines the changing role and powers of Congress over time in the USA. Starter quiz and debate colour coding sheet on the debate on whether Congress is more of a WATCHDOG or LAPDOG in oversight of executive branch. Examines changing role/ powers with such context as the era of the 13th Amendment, 1980s Party Polarisation and Trump with the deep factional divides within the GOP. Also examines the “TRump effect” on Congressional elections since 2016. Includes article updates on: Can Congress pass legislation with a divided government? and The state of Partisanship in congress in 2023. Includes recent attempts to CEnsure Rashida Tlaib, Impeach Biden etc.

Edexcel ALevel Politics Lesson to compare Congress and Parliament (actually about 2 hours work plus hwk). Does not require textbooks or any additional resources but secure knowledge is important however if you have used my lessons preceding this one, you will have all the knowledge you need! Includes all of the info- but knowledge/ understanding will be important in case of student questions. Includes discussion task, comparative highlighting tasks and analysis tasks,

How effectively does Congress fulfil its role of Representation in the USA? -Includes up to date examples and video links of AOC, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Marco Rubio etc. Very detailed- explains concepts of gerrymandering and pork barrel politics, incumbency advantage, caucuses etc. Lesson lasts around 2hours as I teach in doubles but can be broken down into smaller chunks. Includes debate sheet on How effectively Congress performs this role for students to caption each argument and use for essay planning

Edexcel ALevel Politics (Can be used for AQA too) This two hour lesson examines the Electoral College system in the USA. It includes- how it works, explanation of strengths and weaknesses and colour code/ evaluation of argument exercise Case study of the 2020 Presidential election including the controversy links here to the Supreme Court topic- Ginni Thomas/ Clarence Thomas scandal. Includes data/ case study on participation and voting behaviour in this election. Also examines why Biden won.
