Hate teaching Electoral Systems? I used to as well- no matter how I taught them- students could never remember the differences and strengths and weaknesses. Edexcel Politics ALevel can be used for any spec- (Note may now be slightly out of date as the Mayoral elections have changed system) and list no longer used This resource was created after 10 years of frustration! It is designed to let students explore the different systems for themselves- engaging with the ballot forms and trying to work out how they work and the strengths and weaknesses for themselves. When I used this for the first time last year the students remembered the systems so much better than ever before and were able to evaluate them really well. Accompanying powerpoint and worksheets to go with the interactive ballot activity and card sort. This resource covers 5-6 hours of teaching on electoral systems including a detailed evaluation of FPTP and a comparison to other electoral systems as a legacy of the Jenkins commission. It covers most of the Elections topic just nothing on Referendums. All videos except one are embedded for your convenience- the other was too large! This lesson is designed to reflect on Nicholas’ problems and explain the growth of opposition against the Tsar in Russia prior to the 1905 revolution. Looking at the long term impact of Alexander IIs reforms such as the creation of Zemstvo and Emancipation of Serfs and the political spectrum. Lesson designed to take 2 hours plus homework- the Marxism stuff takes a lot of explaining!

This lesson is for the Component 1 teaching of Democracy. It examines the development of suffrage in the UK and milestones which led to this and examines more recent debates about the growth of suffrage e.g. Votes for 16 and the voting rights for prisoners. If you can get hold of a copy of Blackadder III Dish and Dishonesty it is well worth it- so funny for the state of Democracy in the 19th Century but it is not essential for this lesson. Obviously I cannot share this for copyright reasons. All other resources are included. Part of my whole topic on DEmocracy priced £8 you may wish to buy the whole topic instead :)
