Organize all your ELA materials by Common Core Standard! When I first began teaching in 1989, a wonderful teacher gave me a binder filled with teaching materials. All the materials were organized by objectives--we didn’t call them standards or indicators back then. That binder was my life-line. Enter Common Core. While much of the content of my binder was still relevant, it needed to be reorganized. Some things did have to go and new things were added. Some of the objectives, now called standards, were looking a little thin. But with my binder, it was easy to see the gaps that still need to be filled. This product doesn’t have actual lessons, but it does provide you with everything you need to get organizing by make your own common core binder! Every 8th grade English Language Arts Standard has it’s own sheet (both a color and black and white version), a master list of all standards for tracking dates taught, ready made index tabs for every standard/indicator, binder spines (both color and black and white) and a Quick Note/evaluation sheet for recording additional resources (websites, smart-board lessons, videos, etc.) and the effectiveness of the lesson. I personally opted to do 4 binders (literature, informational text, writing and language). I included foundational skills with the literature binder and speaking and listening with writing. I printed the main covers in color, but the individual standards on coordinating colored paper. You could laminate the divider pages, but I opted to slip each into a protective sleeve. The possibilities of how to set your binder up are virtually endless. Students are asked to write that decimal as a fraction or a mixed number in lowest terms. The decimal place values practiced include tenths, hundredths and thousandths. The purpose of a ‘We Flip for Math’ Flip Book, is to provide a struggling student with a step-by-step guide to take them through the process they are struggling with. I have various flip books available in my classroom, but only after I’ve taught the concept and we have practiced it a number of times. The complexity of some skills can be quite challenging for many students. Being able to remember all the steps can become overwhelming for some. A flip-book can help walk these children through the process. In addition, I have found flip-books can be helpful when sending homework home . Including a flip book can make for very happy parents! This packet contains a 2-part flip-book that focuses on multiples. In the first section, the step-by-step process for finding a single number's multiples is given. The second section, shows how to use The 'M' Method to find the Least Common Multiple of two numbers. Also included are 10 ‘Jumbo’ practice cards and two ready-made tabs for dividing the two parts. Answer key is included. Just a note, The 'M' Method for finding LCM works well when first introducing the concept of finding the LCM. The method is quite different than finding GCF, which helps prevent confusing the two skills. The method also provides a very structured approach that makes the skill easier for most students to master.

This Monkey's Mayhem card game allows students to practice multiplication patterns with decimals in the classic ‘Old Maid’ game format. In addition, the cards could be used to play the classic game of “Concentration”--just remove the “Monkey Mayhem” card. Students need to understand the concept of moving the decimal when multiplying by multiples of 10. Students also need to have experience working with exponents. For example, an equation might be 5.67 x 10. It will be obvious that some cards are not matches, but others will involve some thinking because I intentionally used the same number with a different decimal placement.The set contains a total of twenty-seven pairs of cards. Also, included is the “Monkey Mayhem” card (my version of the ‘Old Maid’) and an instruction card.

In addition, the cards could be used to play the classic game of “Concentration”--just remove the “Monkey Mayhem” card. Only, what I call, ‘basic’ conversions are included. For instance, 1 day equals 24 hours or 4 quarts equal 1 gallon or 12 inches equal 1 foot. Customary units of capacity, length, weight and time are included. The set contains a total of twenty-three pairs of cards. Also, included is the “Monkey Mayhem” card (my version of the ‘Old Maid’) and an instruction card.

"I Have, Whoooo Has" is a fun game that can be used to practice a variety of skills. This pack includes THREE sets, all designed to practice adding and subtracting integers (to see examples of types of questions asked take a look at the preview page). I have found that having a deep understanding of multiplying and dividing by powers of ten is critical to mastering the metric system which is usually introduced later in the school year. Laying the groundwork early with this type of practice, makes the metric system so much easier for all students. Please take a look at the preview page to see the types of questions asked. Each set includes 24 cards. Also included are card covers. I usually run a cover on the backside of each card. This allows me to easily keep sets together and not mixed up. Plus, it adds some color to the game. If colored printer ink is at a premium, you can choose to run the black and white cover instead. Again, this will allow you to keep the cards in the proper set. You can play this game whole class by distributing cards to all students. Note that some students may have more than one card. Next, the teacher prompts the student that has the first card to start by reading their card. Students will have to determine the next number in the sequence. Whichever student has the card with the correct answer will read theirs. And so on. The game continues until the last student reads their card, "I have the last card!" Another alternative to playing whole class is to play it with small groups of students. The process would work the same way, however each student would have multiple cards. I like playing it this way even better, because it really keeps the players on their toes. So, in my room, this is usually an activity that groups of 6 or 8 play. Now, since you have 3 sets with this purchase, you could have three groups of 8 playing at once in your room. As I said, if a player has multiple cards, they have to be paying attention. Integer Rules resource for students and parents! This fold-up resource provides students with the rules for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing integers. Included in this packet is a four-flap fold-up. The fold-up explains the rule for each operation and provides examples of each. The teacher has two options for the inside of the fold-up. One option is completely filled in. The second option has empty example boxes for the students to fill in with problems of their own. To assemble the fold-up, run a copy of the outside (p.3). The outside will appear to be upside-down. This is done intentionally for a proper fold-up. Next, choose the inside (either p. 4 or 5) and run it on the backside of the outside. Next, with the inside face up, bring the bottom of the page up to the center black line and fold. Then, bring the top of the page down to the center black line and fold. Finally, cut on the 2 dotted lines. The end result should be a four-flap fold up. I have also included to 2-sided worksheet to use with students. Also, included is an answer key.

Learn about Prisms! This tri-fold defines a prism, polyhedrons and lateral face. A visual representation shows what a lateral face and the base. Several prisms: triangular, rectangular, cube, pentagonal, hexagonal and octagonal are all shown. Always make a test copy before copying for your students to make sure the cover and inside fold up properly. Note that the cover is intentionally upside down for easier printing.
