This lesson introduces learners to the importance of taking calculated risks for a reward. Example or weighing the upsides vs downsides before coming to a decision to take a risk. An activity which gets students to think about situations in their own life for example, revising vs going out to see friends - students then weigh up the pros and cons (analysis) and finally make a judgement with a depends (evaluation) on whether the risk is worth it. Sometimes risk leads to failure, (not part of the spec but is good for students to know) and in business we must learn to bounce back from failure, so some anecdotes to help understand this. We look at financial and non financial objectives then go on to completing a table identifying which objectives are financial and non financial. This double lesson introduces learners to the importance of cash for the survival of a business, inflows and outflows are discussed, students seperate inflows from outflows, then they go on to complete a cash flow forecast step by step with guidance on the powerpoint. Formulas are given to help work out net cash flow, opening and closing balance. Students then go on to consolidate this by creating a cash flow forecast for Ian Beale’s fish and chip shop, some further calculation practice followed. 3 and 6 mark questions with model answers to build exam skills on the topic. We look at the business cycle and break down what happens at each stage, students have plenty of assessment opportunities to consolidate this knowledge. The second lesson looks at exchange rates and interst rates and their effects on consumers and businesses, calculation practice included and other activities to consolidate this knowledge.
