GCSE AQA, Spec 8700 English Language, Entire lesson for paper 1 Question 3.

(0)
A full lesson, designed for a 3 hours session but can be adapted to suit your own sessions. Lesson is filled with videos, group/paired/individual tasks and group discussions. Package comes with PPT with guidance notes, 2 videos and all accompanying worksheets. This lesson also comes with a useful structural devices mnemonic which can be used in this and subsequent lessons to help your students with this question in the exam. The final task is based around an extract from George Orwell's 1984 and includes modern day parallels with modern movies and current affairs which was a big hit with my students, who love talking about Donald Trump! I was observed delivering this lesson and was awarded a strong grade 2. Feel free to adapt for your own needs, hope it helps.

GCSE English Language - Writing ( either AQA or Edexcel compatible)

(0)
This fantastic and fun lesson can be used with either AQA or Edexcel exam boards for GCSE English language. This lesson focuses on writing skills, emphasising ambitious vocabulary, developing language / structural features and writing for an audience. It is a perfect refresher to build on already taught skills and is an excellent lesson to use after a break or half term to re-inspire students and re-engage them in to English. This full lesson has enough material to fill 3 hours and can be used as one complete session or broken into 2 sessions, it is designed to re-awaken students imagination and uses plenty of bite sized group and team activities to encourage self motivation and independent learning. This session starts off with the "design your dream house" theme and uses MTV Cribs and plenty of stimulating visuals to inspire students and get their engines running. It ends with a look at Tolkiens description of a Hobbit Hole and the use of structural features used to engage his audience and bring them on a journey , therefore progressing students skill level from simple descriptive writing to something more sophisticated. The final main task is for the students to write a piece of mind blowing descriptive writing of their own dream house using all the skills covered. Resources include ppt of the full lesson with slides which can be printed and distributed, Hobbit extract with Q&A section, video with accompanying worksheet, writing scaffold, MTV cribs blurb sheet for those who don't know the programme. This lesson has engaged and inspired students every time I have used it and has lead to some really great pieces of writing. Hope it helps.

GCSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE (AQA)- p2 q3 OR Functional Skills - BIAS AND INFERENCE

(0)
This is a brilliant resource I have used with both GCSE and Functional English students to help them understand bias writing and inference. I have an FE background and so encouraged to embed English into other disciplines, this resource was initially used to teach dance students however I quickly found that students from almost any discipline responded to this resource and so its compatibility naturally grew. Therefore this resource can be used when teaching Paper 2 Question 3 with AQA GCSE English Language students or L2 FS. This resource uses a clip from Americas Best Dance Crew, this dance troop are diverse in culture, gender and age - as the youngest is only 15, knowing small details like this can help students confidence and can go a little way to helping to break down barriers of gender and culture. It also allows the teacher to expand on these ideas and themes if they so wanted to. This lesson uses group and team discussion, allows the students to share and build on their own ideas therefore encouraging independent discovery and learning and looks into biased writing, identifying biased language and phrases and ends with a final writing task of their own with a peer marking assessment. The identifying task is designed to challenge and there are words banks to support the weaker students. This resource can be altered and developed further to suit your course and / or students if desired. Hope it helps
GCSE English - Great, fun introduction to inference. Can be used with any exam board.

GCSE English - Great, fun introduction to inference. Can be used with any exam board.

Students often struggle with the idea of inference, particularly within an exam situation. This often leads to students struggling to explain their points meaning they lose valuable marks. This is a fun, humour filled lesson which "gets back to basics" lesson with plenty of group activities with embedded confidence building. Activities allow for stretch and challenge for the more capable in your groups. Activities draw from humour and social issues (sexism in advertising) finally leading to activities which draw from literature (War Horse). Final activity will require students to have knowledge of the PQI / PEA / PEE structure, however this is easy to adapt and change to your students needs. This lesson was design initially for the AQA GCSE specification, however it will work for a range of levels (including Functional Skills) and for all exam boards.

Cirque Du Soleil, Crystal Palace , Millennium Dome - Paper 2 question 3 and 4 AQA English Lan 8700

This is a full, interactive, quick paced lesson which covers a lot of ground as this lesson has enough material to cover a 3 hour class, however it can easily be broken into 3 separate lessons if needs be as there is a lot of information in this session. The lesson warms up the students by using vocabulary building activities and by looking at Cirque Du Soleil to practice the skills needed for paper 2 question 3. The lesson then moves on to an older piece of writing covering the Great Exhibition in 1851, developing the skills needed for P2:Q3 but also preparing the students for a piece of 19th century writing. The last phase of the lesson then compares the Great Exhibition to a piece of writing covering the Millennium Dome Exhibition in 2000. The lesson is broken up with 3 videos, worksheets and has lots of room for interactive paired and group activities and also includes practice exam answer tasks which involve deeper thinking skills. Students support and learn from one another with peer assessment and a short self assessment plenary which encourages independent learning whilst slides and worksheets include starter sentences to support the weaker students. Hope it helps

Functional English - plurals

(0)
I have created this sessions to help support those FS learners where English is not their first language. One area I find many struggle with is the application of plurals, and area which lets them down at L1 and L2. This session has been created to follow initial delivery of plural rules and is designed to practice the application of plurals within the learners own writing. This session is learner lead and recaps plural rules, asks the learners to proofread / correct plural errors. We then move towards different types of text (article vrs eye witness account) and asks the learner to further develop writing in that style. Underpinned is need to take ownership of learning and we take the time to demonstrate and create ideas on how to take a class task and expand on it in order to use for meaningful self study. I created this session for a specific learner in mind, however you can adapt this session to cater to your own cohort. Please keep in mind the TES preview is limited and may not give an accurate reflection of the resource as a whole. Hope it helps.

Teach me to write

This is a 30 page presentation full of starter / small activities designed to broaden imagination and develop creative writing skills. I personally like to start the academic year with these as a way to promote a fun and lively image to GCSE English and engage learners with the course early on. I find that these types of fun, group activities help break down any negative barriers students may have to English and helps to build confidence in disengaged learners. These activities are mostly group / paired activities which can be boiled down to individual tasks. These tasks can be achieved by learners of all levels and are very useful in helping students tackle the creative writing sections of the GCSE exam. Hope it helps

Prince George takes Ballet - Functional Eng L2 or introduction GCSE ENG LANG to writers view points

This session is fast paced and covers a lot of ground. I have used it in both level 2 functional English and as a starter lesson in GCSE English Language in the first month of the new academic year. As many students I have taught within FE are resistant to English, lessons which encourage the demonstration of opinions, encourage critical thinking and group / pair activities are extremely helpful in engaging students with English early on. This session looks at male dancers such as Sergei Polunin and the recent comments made by an American presenter about Prince George taking ballet at school. We use this example to cover wider topics such as prejudice, tolerance and encourage discussions which allow students to look at the issue from a different angle, but also to look at subject specific topics such as writers point of views, language features. The resource comes with the full lesson, with starters, discussion, main activity and peer assessment plenary, on powerpoint, with hyperlinks to various online videos / articles and 7 pages of worksheets and support material. There is enough material to cover a 3 hour session and so can be altered to suit whatever length sessions you may have. Please keep in mind that the TES preview does sometimes alter the look of the resource and this is not always a true reflection. Hope it helps

Winston Churchill - Compare two viewpoints (AQA but can be used with other exam boards)

(0)
This is a fast paced session, filled with videos, team and individual exercises. It is designed to reinforce prior learning and is best used closer to the summer exam. It is designed to fill 2 - 3 hours of teaching time, which can be broken and modified into two sessions if desired. It covers paper 2 questions 3 and 4 ( writers viewpoints and comparison of two texts). Both texts are modern day texts in order to help illustrate and use the skills learned (language and structure) to answer these questions, although in the actual exam one of the texts will be older. The session is based around the life of Winston Churchill, his highs and lows. The session slowly builds, developing knowledge and information about Churchill, both the good and the bad, and recapping exam skills as it progresses. All tasks are scaffolded to help those with mixed ability classes and challenges students to think analytically and answer the two questions as they would in the exam itself. The resource can be modified to cater for your own cohort or for different exam boards and leaves room for group discussions as extensions or can be cut back if you have short timetabled sessions. I work within FE and this is a session which has worked well with my 16 - 19 students. Please keep in mind that the TES preview can distort the look of the resources and this is not always a true reflection. Hope it helps

Functional Skills L2 / GCSE English

This resource can be used with L2 functional skills classes or with GCSE English classes with enough material to cover up to 2 hours. This resources covers language features and apostrophes in one lesson, underpinning proofreading and writing to describe. This is a quick paced session which involves both group and individual tasks, it has routes for stretch and challenge whilst also giving tasks enough scaffolding to support the weaker students in the class. This session is designed to be developed or split into two separate sessions depending on your classes needs. Please be advised that the TES preview does not always give a true reflection of the resource.

Interview techniques

This session has been designed for school leavers (looking to move into apprenticeships) and for those who have been out of work for a number of years. The format of the session is very team / group based and covers different interview question types, how to prepare for an interview and STAR answer techniques. The activities are team based where learners are “playing for points” and the winners are announced at the end of the session. My sessions are short, however you can adapt the session to suit your own needs and cohorts. Be advised the ate TES preview does not always reflect the materials attached accurately. Hope it helps

Ascentis L1 sustainability course

As Ofsted are now looking for evidence of embedding / delivering sustainable practices as a part of delivery, many colleges / schools are now looking to deliver sustainability qualifications as short courses. This resource is the complete course (designed to be delivered in a day) for the Ascentis L1 qualification on sustainability. This course looks into areas such as " 3 pillars of sustainability", “renewable / non renewable resources / energy”, “consumption”, “agricultural impacts”, “sustainable communities” and self reflection on own sustainable practices. As I teach in the Greater Manchester area, I have included the regions sustainability policy and promises (this can obviously be altered to suit your own region) The course comes with 5 video clips, activities for groups and pairs, self reflections and regular recaps and quizzes. In keeping with the eco-friendly theme, many activities are done with mini white-boards to reduce paper use. The lesson comes in clear sections that can be broken down and delivered in bitesize chunks - depending on your delivery model or you can carve the resources to use as embedded activities in your other sessions. Feel free to adapt to your classes needs. Please keep in mind that the TES preview does at times distort the look of the resource and this is not always a true refection. Hope it helps

AQA GCSE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, 7 PRACTICE EXAM PAPERS

I know from experience with my own students that the more practice you do from a wide range of different texts, the more prepared you will be for the live exam. It is at this stage in the academic year that practice becomes very important and knowing your exam paper - the type of questions and layout of the paper - is vital to achieving the grades you want for your students. A diverse collection of interesting and engaging practice papers is difficult to come by as the 8700 spec is still relatively new. Therefore I have authored my own practice papers to use with my own classes, all with questions based from both the AQA exam papers. The sources for these mock papers include extracts from The Colour Purple, Harry Potter and Hunger Games. Paper 2 mocks include documents on the topics of Child Labour, disasters and celebrity culture. This bundle contains: Paper 1 mock x 3 Paper 2 mock x 3 All source materials A bite sized mock with focuses on a selection of the more tricky questions from both papers. That is 7 papers all together, which averages as £1.40 per paper. Please be advised that the TES preview can distort the look of the material so please keep in mind that this is not always a true reflection of the resource. Hope it helps.

The total amount of the individual resources combined as a bundle is £53.00 but I’m willing to sell at £20, saving you 62% What type of lessons are they? My style is very much about class participation, student ownership of learning and quick pace. Lessons come with starters, plenaries, paired, group and independent activities which last from 5 /10 / 15 / 20 and 30 mins at a time. I teach 3 hour sessions therefore all lesson have enough material to fill 3 hours. I also like to base parts of my sessions around pop culture and current issues in order to engage students and demonstrate that English is not a subject or skill confined to the classroom but rather it is a life long skill with real relevance in the world. I also like English to have an element of fun and try to encourage students to have fun with language and encourage creativity. Many lessons cover a range of levels as I teach mixed level classes, I use supportive techniques such as sentence starters, word banks and peer assessment and self assessment.
