The proliferation of Barbarians into society and the Army caused this. Efforts at reform were immaterial. The elite became resigned and in a reprehensible way joined the Barbarians if they could. The theory that Rome could revive in 450AD seems plausible by is wrong. The sad facts are that the on and off rocky times of a generation before turned into a steady unchangeable decline. The spread of Barbarians into society and the Army caused this. Efforts at reform were of no importance. The top people became accepting of this and in a contemptIble way joined the Barbarians if they could.

Discriminating English scholars in the early Middle Ages had a dilemma. In their diligence, they noticed excerpts of old prayers in Latin differed from the way Latin was being spoken then. This was the first time the digression of a language was noticed in the Middle Ages. Latin was turning into French, Spanish and other languages. People have a disdain for Middle Ages learning but this was an important discovery. Alert English scholars in the early Middle Ages had a problem. In their steady effort, they noticed passages of old prayers in Latin were different from the way Latin was being spoken then. The focus on the change was because they did not want to and had an aversion to changing prayers; they may not work in the changed form! This was the first time the wandering of a language was noticed in the Middle Ages. Latin was turning into French, Spanish and other languages. People have a low opinion for Middle Ages learning but this was an important discovery.
